If they should both be lying in the same plane, select the plane, set the Z depth ( if you know where they should be enter it, analyze the position of the ends to determine if they are not coincident with the plane) and project them (move not copy). They may be slightly off the plane, just a 0.0001 or less (which might not be apparent) difference will give you an error.

This is quite common on derived geometry from models

If they intersect , they will intersect in 3d or 2d .  In cases like this I usually xform project onto the plane in question. A projection of a wireframe element onto it's own plane will not alter it , only the elements not lying in the plane will be projected and also a parallel arc projected will remain an arc ...
