  1. Trying to figure the best way to do this:

Solid stock,, drill a 1.5 hole thru, then want to dynamic mill the hex shape.

All the dynamics want to go outside to in,,, I can get 2D dynamic Area Mill to work with

a single chain,, but then it cuts air from the center,,, If I add a second chain in the center to account

for the thru hole, it makes a crazy path that takes too long.

    what am I missing??

    Never mind,,, got it....

Dynamic rest mill using previous drill op works fine.........

  3. I really wish they would revamp the tool manager so the tool holders could be assigned in the tool libraries.

I will be taking delivery of a horizontal mill in a few weeks and I plan to have 80 standard tools loaded in the machine at all times.

The holders will never change and it would be great if I could set up Mastercam to reflect that.

I think taking care of the holders at the library level is the best way to go.

This is absolutely the biggest thing that needs to change,,,,,

whoever came up with the idea of associating the holder at the operation level instead of the tool library level obviously has never ran a cell.......

We draw every single tool with the spindle and all holder geometry and select "custom file" in the tool definition to avoid all the little nasty gouges and crashes...

I was hoping that with the holder libraries going to .DB style in X6 we would be able to associate the holder to the tool, doesn't look that way...... :(

  4. I have a crappy casting that varies all over the place so,,,

I'm using our probe with Renishaw's easyset macros.

The casting has a trianular feature that we want to re-cut to locate on a fixture

Starting with O9843 to find the angle of the side wall to rotate program.

Then using O9023 (3-point bore cycle) to hit the three walls of the triangle

to find center of the feature and set a new work offset to prep the parts for further machining.

O9843 works great every time, O9023 is not consistent at all,,, position varies all over...

Not sure if a bore cycle is the best for hitting 3 flat walls.....

  5. We use low profile Alberti RAH. Great for small tools. I'd like to use Commands coolant driven for larger tools but spindle indexing is crucial (trying to avoid running several $5k+ tools for one job...)

I know that some machines have spindle indexing (with spindle clamping), but I'm not sure if it's available for MAM.

We have a EL Tool RAH that's coolant driven.

Yes, you can run it on a MAM72-63V.... Just use M19 to lock the spindle.

    Read thru this:

    EL Tool instructions

    it explains using M19....

  6. We are looking at going fullblown on the capto system...

Throw out the opinions good and bad...

We do a lot of prototyping,, quick changeover is crucial..

We also run one or two high volume jobs in between.. (4000+ run)

    Something like this???

  7. ACtually, thinking about this earlier today, if it were my cell, I would give each machine a range of non overlapping serial numbers.

When each one ran through the range, I would bump the range for each machine.

Then you just store the next serial number in the range as a variable and it always knows where to pick up.

    JM2C

    Exactly what I was thinking.....

Thanks for the help James,, as always,, much appreciated!!! B)

  8. Need some Macro help Boyz.......

We are loading up a tombstone with multiple parts on multiple faces in our Makino Cell.

Each part has an engraved part number but also needs a sequential serial number.

Each face of the tombstone will have multiple parts.

Need to serialize each part on one face then rotate and continue serializing on the next face.

Also need to keep track of sequential numbers each time the pallet goes in...

(we are talking thousands of parts)

Never enough time in the day,, So,,, anyone willing to help out writing such a beast??

Or,, does anybody already do this??

We are willing to pay a reasonable fee......

    Lay it on me......

  9. can anyone running one of these cards tell me the driver you are running and having success with? i need to pass this onto one of my customers asap.

I'm running the FX3800 with the latest driver:

    267.17-Quadro-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql.exe

    Works great with no problems...

    Intel DX58SO MOBO

    Intel® Core i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz

    12GB RAM

    Windows 7 64bit

    NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800

    Dual HPw2207h monitors

  10. Just had an awesome demo today at Mcam Northwest....

Thanks goes out to Tim Rowley at Mcam NW for the nice facility.

Chris Rizzo for the great help and training materials.

Steve Linsk from Verisurf and the Crazy Millman himself,, Ron Branch.

My mind is still going crazy over all the possibilites

that this hardware and software combo brings to the table....

Everything from first article inspection all the way through

to machine calibration (think ball-bar testing in reverse)

The ease of use and the power of the software is amazing.

The reverse engineering package in Verisurf really got my attention as well. B)

I could go on and on,,, instead,

I'll tell you to book a demo with Ron and the boyz at Verisurf and you'll be impressed.

And,,,, it all runs inside Mastercam....

    The integration works very well.

I'll be picking your brain in the near future Ron..... :D

  11. 2D Highspeed - Coremill is what you want...

There is a bug though,,, watch out if you use depth cuts!!!

If it wants to rapid thru your part on subsequent depth cuts, close down Mastercam and then re-launch Mastercam,, problem will go away.... ;o(

    HTH

  12. Yes,, we plan on trying to program with Mastercam.

It does have the conversational control, we are signed up with the on-line courses at Mori.

Haven't had a chance to look at the course yet, but it's supposed to simulate the machine on-line.

Tim at Mcam NorthWest says he has a post already dialed in for this exact machine.

Get to see that next week.....

  13. quote:

Are there any setting elsewhere than need to be set?? My options button is greyed out.

I kind of rememebr installing the Verisurf add-on breaking Mastercam mesh.. but thought this had been fixed

I just installed Verisurf for X4 and it "greyed out" the options button for file merge???

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times.... WTF?????

    How do you fix it?????

  14. quote:

Looks like you could have been better off wiring out a majority of the part.

Sweet job though. Did you get much chatter with it hanging out that far?

Wire EDM would take too long.....

    (if we even had one...)

At those speeds and feeds we had no chatter at all.. was really sounding sweet!!!

Great example of where directing the cutting forces axially along the spindle really helps.

What brand of heat shrink? Is that a Bilz or Haimer?

Actually, it's a Briney V40SF-125-600 that we had

to skim off about .020 from the OD.

(was the same dia. as the cutter)

  15. Did somebody say Plunge Milling????

    img0278ax.th.jpg img0282y.th.jpg

    Matsuura MAM72-63V PC2 Vertical 5-axis Machining Center

Seco 2 inch Plunge Rougher in Cat40 extended shrink-fit holder......

    12.150 Gage length cuckoo.gif

    5000 RPM - 50 IPM - .125 stepover - Sweet!!!

Part was turned inside before hand,

2 inch Mitsubishi Facemill pocketed both sides partway in,,

    then Dive!! Dive!! Dive!!!

Absolutely Scary to watch it tool change!!! eek.gif

Max tool length in the machine is 350mm!!

(No,,, I can't tell you what the part is....so don't ask)

  16. quote:

so, its like buying a puzzle right? It all come's in one box but up to you to put it together.

No,,, you buy a puzzle that some of the pieces are missing, but you don't find out until the puzzle is almost finished. But wait,, you will get the missing pieces a couple of years down the road....

    bonk.gif

I've said it all along since MATSS,,, (remember that??) This should be priority #1 with CNC!!!

Oh,,, but we can buy PartMaker in the meantime.... biggrin.gif
