  1. Thats too funny, what is this side over here anyway?
  2. Be careful where and who you lease from...if you send your upfront payments to a company on the other side of the country and they are shady shifty crooks can you go to court on the other side of the country??
  3. ditto on gun drill, they are amazing..
  4. Turk , shops in dayton have lowed down and in the past Mastercam was more prominent on the north end of dayton heading up to reseller in Findley. They did use Mastercam at voc-tech school in Springfield (Greencounty )so there maybe lots of it that way...my info is a decade old...maybe as a part-timer as people get layed-off and shops are temp. short handed to get in the door.
  5. I have also seen optical comparators sell for almost nothing at auction, I added a 14 inch with lenses to 50X for around $200....1000 lb. also had 10X, 20X lenses, surface illumination does not work at the moment.
  6. If its H-13 for a die cast die, harden to 46-48RC.
  7. Some mold shops spend the day programming and setting up, then run machines at night...or wire edm small jobs during the day and saving the longer burns for night time, etc..that line of thought and analyze for the work best suited.
  8. Seriously, what would something like that cost?..no mention of tol. which would change everything.
  9. I just got a Haas "sale flyer" that said "buy a VMC and we will throw in a rotary table for free- up to 14K value" or something like that... I also got a Hurco flyer for hassle free 5-axis starting at $99,995...they said its a true 5 axis. Spend too much on a machine thats gonna sit some while you learn and it will kill ya. just like smaller shops that "look ahead" and buy a big building thinking they will grow into it...taxes alone kill them every year..
  10. http://dayton.bizjournals.com/dayton/other...05/daily50.html? Here is a link to 100 cities and what has happened to their manufacturing base in the last year...some cities have added and many have lost. Dayton, ohio lost 3K ... L.A. 15K...detroit 22K...Seattle was up 1K
  11. http://dayton.bizjournals.com/dayton/other...05/daily20.html? up to 8 percent in n. carolina...had been a hot area as it seemed everyone in Dayton ohio was moving there.
  12. Might check online as I have read about companies that do this.
  13. There were only 4 ads in the skilled section want ads last couple of sundays...a year ago it was pretty much one page. There was one machinist ad. I am with Jarrett; see what the next year and new quarter bring as I am rumored to get a package of tools to build, otherwise I start looking for new business.
  14. quote: There weren't that many. More shops went under because of GM's policies then the latter, then off to China they went after claiming huge losses due to North American shops losing their shirts waiting for GM to pay. Not everything hits the papers. Irony is it not? Getting bailed out for the 'BIG Bailout' That could be as I heard some sorry stories about getting paid...a far cry from the 70's when they sent out for 5 quotes and threw out the highest and the lowest bid and 3 in the middle would then be judged on price, quality ,and delivery...those days will not be back for machine shops..we are expected to lose 10 percent of machining jobs in Ohio in the next few years because of manufactures going off shore (from job report -Ohio burea of Workmans compensation)..mechanical engineers will go up 4 percent and EVERYTHING else was up...although this report was made before stock market banking crunch.
  15. quote: Unless you have an existing business and a good reputation, I would never give anyone up front money. Can't people read ?? If you have a good reputation and record I would give them money.
  16. quote: Anyone who does attempt to do something like this and starts a project, ask for 1/2 the money for programs in advance, cash check then proceed to do work. Unless you have an existing business and a good reputation, I would never give anyone up front money. I heard 10 years ago GM stopped giving deposit money on Molds because shops would take the money and go broke and not still be there to deliver a Tool to them...
  17. Just another view from what I have seen...simple work from "hard to get into customers" can also pay good, i.e a double rate with low skill people. A former moldshop owner and his moldshop owning friends all went to lunch in Denver and they all agreed they could not make any money on the "Hero Molds" that are profoundly difficult because of problems that arise and hard to charge enough because they take longer and someone in the pool of bidders will miss something and prices are too low as a rule because of that... Seems like around here aerospace and medical shops are the only ones doing good because of the war. Good to hear about your success Heavychevy and someone is busy in Molds as Moldshops use to be swamped thru every recession working 55hrs up until globalization.. yes yes lets hear it for the free market!! eventhough everyone fights our goods getting in Bruce, you have avoided a major pitfall that most new shops make of neglecting sales..I know this but still do it..
  18. quote: That's my shop. We're getting busy again now, but the owners are entirely closed to improving things. The guys that care have stopped caring about trying to improve the overall shop. We just do our job and hope that's enough. Wow Charles, I went to your website and you guys look cutting edge to most of us...Good to see you are getting busy.
  19. Black oxider told me today they are up and down and shops in Dayton are starting to lay off...so I won't complain about long busy month ahead..
  20. In dayton Ohio, there was only one columm of "skilled want ads" as oppossed to 4 last june(sunday paper), but shops are still busy...people are concerned about 6 months from now for obvious reason (only 2 machining ads...6 is OK and 12 ads means shops are Loaded and prices are GOOD)
  21. They may have "colored" oil yellow for people to help identify it is #3...I would could call the supplier lubricant house to see. I have never seen anything like this anywhere else including EDM fluids..
  22. After adding 2 moore #3 jig grinders I now use DTE Light oil...
  23. Yes I have 5 gal from 12 years ago I use for light spindle oil in Moore jig boore...what I have is light yellow and has solvent smell sorta and has consistancy of solvent, I would never guess it is spindle oil...was told its thin to penetrate close tol. fits...sounds like same thing to me...
  24. I would look at a used one from an auction as they go really cheap because of decline of the mold industry. If they are too old they may not be supported as well. May have to call factory on particular models or buy a second one for parts. Some models are still totally supported.
