  1. 425 pounds and 1.3 HP ...yikes...the machines I mentioned above were R8 spindles, 40taper would be more $$ at auction and better. I just saw some phase converters at a low price on e-bay and they were rotary types. just be careful buyin on the internet as some people have put up things for sale they only took pictures of.
  2. I have seen some decent 2-axis protrak knee mills go for 2.5 to 3K at auctions...best route by far in my opinion.

quote: Is there anything better in the Haas price range? Dayton is one of the largest machining tooling centers in the country and there are tons of haas and Milltronics (Minnesota-USA) machines here. I would also look at them as they keep getting better and better, they have a ridgid roller way system as an option that I am curious about.(40 millionths encoders ,standard , 2 year warrenty-standard I think)

quote: If you don't need the RPM I'd really look hard at the gearbox; my VF2 gearbox machine will stomp all over my buddy's VF2SS with the 12K spindle and not even start to breathe heavy. I don't own a Haas , but the geared head option for a few bucks and look at all that torque! has always caught my eye.
  5. I am curious about what it costs? All that info, cost studies, etc. and I did not see a price.
  6. In the homebuilding industry, that is called "The Contractor Way"
  7. "you go Hardmill"!! I hate thieves. for them
  8. Motivated people that push themselves are very hard to find, keep your good attitude and "do something with it" and you will go far.
  9. http://www.mooretool.com/cusmach.html Down to the middle of the page. Also another diamond machine over at the side of page..
  10. Depends on the part and the equipment, and if running a CNC with lots of hogging on the part is the machinist standing there and just watching it? I have got a engine lathe with a CNC conversational control and a Manual lathe with a digital readout with the tool "set to zero" and that is FAST, for one part. and trav-a-dials.
  11. I bought a new manual lathe when I started my shop and after one year it was turning out of round .001 in. I adjusted the tapered roller bearings on the spindle and it has been perfect ever since. just my experiance. Saw this at shops I had worked at (chatter and out of round at another) and co-workers said lathes were junk...they needed a one hour tune-up..
  12. I think you can build your own, a single phase motor big enough to drive(pulley and belt) the Y-wound 3phase motor which becomes a generator as it is spun. My understanding of the rotary store bought ones is the static box tricks the 3 phase motor it drives, into running one 1 phase, then it generates 3 phase power that runs over to your machine. Old Timers use to build their own..i had built my own years back with a static box to run a 3 phase Y wound motor I had bought. Think MSC etc sell those static boxes and you gotta buy ones big enough to run your largest current draw. MAY have been if largest motor is 5HP you need to use a 7.5 motor for a generator etc.Probable info all over the internet for doing this as I have seen info to "build your own wire EDM and even a jig grinder using a Dremel:)
  13. You know, if you go to add other "used" machines almost all will be 3 phase and if you move into industrial space you will likely have 3 phase power (cheaper, especially if its "on demand").
  14. quote: The only machine I know of theat gives you a choice is a Haas Mini. They can be wired either single or three phase. Milltronics does also from Minnesota, but not sure if its all models.
  15. quote: I'm STILL looking for a building. They said on National news commercial is startin to sink like Homes. I know of a building that was renting for 1.5K month and "renter" shop moved out and they are desperate for a renter at 1K.. But I will buy a building when I move, at cheapo price.
  16. There are some good books at top of the page and reasonably priced, I have bought their lathe book and mill book and solid models book..not free, but close.
  17. quote: If it's anything like Ampco 18 Pretty sure thats really Aluminum Bronze and Ampco 18 or ampco 21 (even more brittle and abrasive resistant) is a brand name.
  18. V9 here to machine, use X2 to look at files, pull dims. etc. Will get around to X2 and the post processor thing after I add the next CNC..or if employee already knows X. Will NOT NOT train anyone in V9.
  19. quote: It is a hacker and they want people to send them emails so they will be stupid enough to infect their computer with a virus of their making. Also, people just want you to wire them money....they will take a picture of an actual machine at a dealer, then try to sell it themselves. Gotta use ur noodle and some caution when buying on-line.
  20. One of the trade publications had an artical on CNC and or robotic deburring this last month...either Manufacturing Enginnering or Production tooling or Modern Machine shop, can't remember which one...we have come a long way since "a kid on the burr bench" dang that sucked..
  21. Chris, I got chucker pics if the harig grinder is a ballway it will say so in big letters at about eye height when standing in front to operate and ya can push the table with your fingers....I will never go back to steel or teflon ways after usin a ballway..
  22. quote: Thad are those worth the money? Always wanted to try one. I am not "Thad", but can't imagine not having one...I have the hole-less one, but have to remember to buy one of those with a hole ( a toilet?), don't think they existed when I bought my chair.
  23. If there is a chamfer or burr , you would actually be beeping that in on a hole.
  24. Some aircraft drills have a short flute length and anytime a drill enters a hole and goes deeper than the lenght of flute I use extra care it does not catch a chip between hole and "solid" dia. I am doing some 420SS pre-hard right now and agree with 300RPM for .5 hole to stop work hardening..
