  1. Brendan, I dont know why it is doing that, but to fix it....all you need to do is change your start point so that the first chain cut is the inner radius and it will work fine.
  2. What toolpath would I use to helical bore a tapered hole? Thanks. I have the hole created as a surface. Hole tapers from .035 to .025"

  5. I did create a new plan on the bottom to fix the problem, but you shouldn't have to do that.
  6. See if you can tell me what is wrong with these two pictures?? The geometry is a simple solid rectangle. This is the view from the top of my part. This is the view from the bottom of my part. . . . . . . Give up yet?? . . . . . . . . . :Jeopardy Theme: Why does MasterCAM flip my part over the Y-axis to view the bottom of the part? The view for the top and the bottom should be the same, but they are not. What is happening to me is that I have a part I am machining on a 4th axis. I have toolpaths applied to the top and bottom faces of the part using C/T planes as TOP and BOTTOM for the respective sides. When I cut the top part of the piece, all the X moves are positive. When I cut the bottom of the piece, all the X moves are negative which will cause my tool to run into my rotary table. Any input would be good. Thanks.
  7. Why is it that when looking for the cycle time, the 5 Axis Flow toolpaths dont give an accurate time? Thanks.

  9. I have a part that i am putting some 5 axis swarf paths to. The one corner has about 3 or 4 surfaces to make it up. When I apply the toolpath, the toolpath jumps around like crazy from the surfaces being crappy. Is there a way to join these surfaces to make 1 surface? thanks.
  10. I would maybe use a face mill to pocket it out. 2.5" diameter with 5 inserts in aluminum. You could probably do 10000RPM's, .15 DOC, and 200 IPM with a 75 percent stepover. Helical bore a starting hole to rapid the cutter in. I just messed around with some times in MC and can probably do it under an hour.
  11. I would use a carbide tool with diamond coating. Look at Harvey Tool, they have some good stuff for good prices. Run as fast as your spindle will go and use about .0005 CPT.

  13. I work in the Kennametal World Headquarters building in Latrobe, PA. They run the smiley face demo next door to our lab in Kennametals Prototype Lab. It is pretty wild to see in person. Story goes that it was discovered they could cut it that fast with ceramic inserts by mistake. I guess a programmer typed in something wrong and they hit the button and it started cutting. It seemed like it was working, so they let it go and found out that they could do it.

  17. I hope you guys understand what I mean. Is there a way to pull the profile from a surface? I have a part that I need to rough out, and if i look at the edge, i get the out line of the part. But all the entites are at different levels of Z becuase of the surfaces. Is there a way to pull the 2D profile from the part? Thanks
  18. I need to get all of my surface normals facing the same way. My problems is the part I am looking at is pretty complicated and when not shaded, it is hard to tell which surface is which, etc... Is there a way to shade the solid but also tell which was the surface normal is pointed?? thanks
  19. I like wear whenever I am threadmilling. I can put the cutter in as a couple thousanths bigger and bring the threads into size using go-no go gauges.
  20. I have a 5mm(.1969) Orbital Drill that I am going to use to cut a .2625 diameter hole. I am setting up the toolpath and need a ramp angle(pitch) of 2°. My question is that the toolpath will only let me put the pitch(ramp) as a value of inches. Is there a way to convert a 2° ramp angle to a pitch value??? thanks in advance.
