  1. Thank you all for your help I think i will try to form tap it.
  2. Jim good point. i am drilling .3 deeper to allow for chips but i am using a tap for steel. i will look for a tap for aluminum today. thanks
  3. A question. I am tapping a 1/4-20 hole .875 deep in 6061 aluminum. If i use the #7 drill the tap will break. If i use a 7/32 drill the tap works fine. Can i assume that if the tap is going deep the drill must be made bigger for the depth?
  4. i saw that thread but i dont know what the difference is between 304 and 316 for machining
  5. Hello, I am currently trying to drill and tap 316 stainless steel. I am starting with a center drill then followed with a #25 drill. we break some of these but the problem is the tapping. we drill to a depth of .800 and we are trying to tap to a depth of .500 but after 4 holes we break the tap. we have tried different rpms and it doesnt get better. I am using a fadal VMC. Anybody have any suggestions for tapping?
  6. Thank you all for your input. i am going to ask the leaders about thread forming and i have some taps for steel that should work. I am going to use a Fadal VMC the only other process i was considering was tap pecking but i am not sire the Fadal will do it. I read in other threads that i have to add a Q to the G84.1 line to get peck tapping so i will try that today too.
  7. a stupid question. I did form tapping in aluminum but this is steel and i dont know what grade but it is not really hard. the question is since forming the thread is smashing it wouldnt that be harder to do that cut the thread?
  8. Anybody know where i can get a 10/24 threadmill thet will go to a depth of .750? i need to tap steel on a blind hole so i thought this would work well but i cant find one that will go pasr .312 deep
  9. Thank you guys for the help this should reduce the machining time alot!!!
  10. Thanks Allan that worked perfect but will the fadal recognize the different depths? oh and i have 2 pallets of 4 vices
  11. yes it is a transformed tool path. i have tried to figure this out but i feel the only options are in the transform options. I have the 3/8 drill doing one hole on vice one and then i do another hole on the same vice but it is a different depth but i make it 2 separate operations because they are different depths.
  12. I am running a fadal VMC and i have 8 4 vices on a pallet. When i program the machine with mastercam it comes out perfect with one exception. A example is i have a 3/8 drill and i use it on 2 different depth holes on each vice so i would like to drill both holes on a vice and move over to the next one but mastercam does one hole at a time on each vice. any ideas on how to correct this issue. i put the file in the mc9 folder and its called joel.mc9
  13. i machine delrin or acetal everyday and it is nice to machine althought it will break if the removal is too fast.
  14. i took the begining Mastercam class at the NTMA in cerritos and it was very good. I was told by my instructor that the next level advanced is well worth taking as it really gets into Mastercam. I am scheduled to take the advanced class in march and can hardly wait.
  15. what are they going to do at the seminar? how can i go?
  16. I thought it was ecellent too!!
  17. its from a solid bar 6.5 inches diameter. just plain aluminum.
  18. Millman thank you for the reply.
  19. I have a question. What rake angle would you use to machine on a lathe 6061 Aluminum? I am using a -5 now. I have a bad chatter problem so i thought i would see what other people thought about the rake angle.
  20. I machine fiberglass once a month. I found fiberglass routers on a web page called http://national-tool.com. I purchased the 1/4 diameter router and so far i have doubled my production from 12 a hour to 24 a hour. i used to mill with endmills but they dont last long. The one router i used last time worked better and is ready for the next load.
  21. Great information thank you all. I understand what you are talking about but i have never done this so i will have to give it a try.
  22. I currently us a different file for every side of the part i machine. We make parts out of solid blocks. My question is do you make 6 separate mastercam programs or do you make one file for all 6 sides?
  23. have these files been run thru "ram saver" it really keeps the file small as it can be.
  24. Thank you all for your input this is very helpful
  25. Thanks for the info guys. can you please add websites or phone numbers
