Steel prices rising

I don`t know about the rest of the country but here we are seeing a minimum increase of 30% on cold roll. Stainless up to 50%. Don`t get me wrong - but since President Bush has increased the teriff it caused China to buy up all our scrap metal. Now look what`s happening. I stand by Bush but this sure is putting a hurt on us.

we are haveing a hard time finding steel here, we buy 5" to 10" round and square stock, about 40,000lbs a day.

yea, bad enough the prices are thru the roof, but there is a real shortage of materiial out there no matter how much you are willing to pay.kinda sucks!

It's not just the price, but the volitility that gets me. I recently quoted a stainless job and the quote I recieved for the material was valid for 24 hours. Beyond that they would not honor the quote.

Same here on the prices. In our quote format we have implimented "Quote is subject to change based on material prices"

Yeah I remember getting people down to $1.28 lb for Stainless 5 years ago now I have seen people asking as much as $3.50 lb WTF. I can also remember getting CRS for $.27lb see that is the way of the dogs and only 5 years.

 

WTF and hen we do everything in our goverment to make use slaves to forgien metal. It is getting harder and harder to find mills to quote you mills runs of material.

I was thinking about putting up a steel building up in northern Nevada and the same thing is happening! The price that they want for steel buildings now is nuts!. The steel going up even makes buying existing buildings more expensive!

Actually in Asia right now there is a massive energy crunch going on with factories in China only up and running 8 hrs a day. People are stealing manhole covers off the streets in Taiwan to melt down. The Alex wheel factory got held up at gunpoint for about 4,000 lbs of steel.

It is. This is a trickle down effect of certain global "activites". It takes energy to make steel. Energy is only derived in a few ways..burning fossil fuels, hydro-electric(dams), and nuclear(steam/turbine).

Hell china is making everything. They got to be running running low on stock. I think we are going to be in trouble if this keeps up.

It's all about oil. Oil prices effect virtually everything. From raw plastics to trucking to pakaging etc. The world is dependent upon oil.
