Spybot, while a great tool for a while, is outdated and obsolete.

Murlin,

I downloaded the spysweeper on my home computer tonite.

I was very impressed on what it found!! eek.gif

I am going to try this on my work computer on Monday.

Hopefully this will kill the little bugga.

I am a little reluctant to change to mozilla cause I know nothing about it and not even seen how it works.

I guess if I knew someone with it and got to try it,maybe it would be easier to change.

I know Matt,go ahead and say it:

"Then we don't wanna hear you crying 'bout your bug infested IE"!! biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

LoL, Brendan.. That's a great thing about Firebird.. all you do is plop it into a folder and run it.. it doesn't do anything to your computer; no install, no fights with IE etc. Perfect for trying it out cuz if you don't like it, delete the folder and puff, it's gone without a trace! biggrin.gif

Google these keywords..

HijackThis & CWShredder

(CWShredder will remove Coolwebsearch jacker and its varients)

MS can take IE with its ActiveX & BH extensions and..

well... I won't go there. smile.gif

Mozilla is very good advice.

I prefer Opera Browser. (the browser from Sweden, Bork!Bork!Bork!)

Opera is robust, and fast. I'd recommend @ least having a look.

opera.com

mozilla.org

good luck in your gremlin cleaning venture.

Had same problem as you Bendon. I had ad-aware and hijack this but they didn't do the trick. So now i have downloaded cwshedder and set Moilla as my web browser and so far so good. Good topic by the way I have been fighting this about 2 months and hopefully its over. Mine kept defaulting to--> yoursearch.cc

Firefox is the name of the browser by mozilla. Kinda like "Ford Escort".... "Mozilla Firefox"

Did you disable "system restore" before the registry changes? In XP pro you have to log in as administrator to do that, it won't show in any other profile even with administrative privs.

I'll try to break it all down. Mozilla, the orginization has a few products for Windows.

Mozilla Suite

This is the product that they're known for. It consists of four apps; Navigator (web browser), Messenger (email client), Composer (HTML editor) and Chazilla (IRC client). This product came from Netscape and will be phased out over the next year or two in favour of Firefox/Thunderbird.

Firefox

This is their next-generation web browser. It's leaner than Mozilla Navigator and will replace it in the Mozilla suite in a year or two. It uses the same rendering engine as Navigator, Gecko, so pages will render the same in Firefox. It's not as mature as Navigator but it's much more modular and I like it a lot better.

Thunderbird

This is their next generation email client. It's leaner than Mozilla Messenger and will replace it in the Mozilla suite in a year or two. It's not as mature as Messenger but, like Firefox, it's much more modular and I like it a lot better.

Hope that makes sense.

There's also FileZilla , an FTP app that I recently tried and love. Also, Mozilla has a Calendar plugin, similar to Outlook. Works real good for free! biggrin.gif I'll try to find the d/l, it's a plugin.

Bullines, I think we might be on the verge of a revolution..

'Rekd teh Mozilla for President!

I got the firefox installed and using it now.

This is much better than the regular mozilla page.

It looks much similar to ie.

Now please explain how the little scumbags are not going to be able to "implant" tracking bugs into my computer by using this firefox platform??

Why is it that they can do it on ie?

You should be fine, I've got at least 2 flavors of Mozilla on 2 of my boxes, as well as IE for nostalga, and don't have problems.

Yeah, I had to listen to my wife cry about it too. She got over it when I explained that she had 2 choices... Go to Kinkos to connect to the web on their computers, or use mine with Mozilla. wink.gif

Then I convinced my brother to try it and his whole famn damily cried for a week and went back to IE. Within a month his computer was so ef'd up he had to buy a new one. LMAO. He's tough headed, as he is using IE on his new comp. We'll see how long that lasts with 2 kids that will just click OK instead of READING what they're clicking OK for... biggrin.gif

As for Media Player, I would suggest ANYTHING besides Media Player. There's plugins for most things you do in IE like Flash and all that happy crappy. There's also going to be some sites designed (in-correctly) around IE's standards, (which are NOT world standards, BTW.)

Because Mozilla is not designed to allow that sort of thing. IE is. Microsoft embeded the ability to run ActiveX (as well as other) controls from web sites on clients. This, of course, produces un-limited resources for people to make malicious programs to take advantage of it. (IE is like building a house with no glass in the windows and only a door with no lock to keep people out)

Like Matt said, ActiveX and ActiveScripting are the culprits. Combine that with the fact that IE is integrated so tightly with Windows itself, you have yourself a recipe for trouble.

Other browsers that aren't IE, not just Mozilla, are web browsers. Period. They are not an extention of Windows. They just browse web sites. The technologies that they use to extend the browser experience on the client side (not server-side like Perl, PHP, ASP, etc) are limited to Java applets (not apps), JavaScript and Flash. All of which DO NOT have the ability to interact with your filesystem. (Note: not ENTIRELY true since Java applets can have access to the local filesystem but the end-user would be prompted heavily unlike ActiveX which allows anything to march in with one click).

Another nice perk about Mozilla/Firefox is that it's actively being developed. New features are added all the time (ah, the open-source life cyle). This is done either to the EXE itself or via freely-downloadable extentions. When was the last time you saw Microsoft add new features to IE instead of security patch after security patch?

It should be noted that Filezilla is not associated with any Mozilla projects. It is a wicked FTP client, tho smile.gif
