i dont know if it's an acronym,but i think swarf is the chips or grinding sludge you get from machining.

It's an old term used for an irregular shaped surface- i.e. airfoil or fuselage surface in areospace work. Hope this helps.

SuperFly is correct, say's me & Webster's Ninth Collegiate Dictionary. [of Scand orgin (1857)] material (as metallic particles and abrasive fragments) removed by a cutting or grinding tool. I guess you Offline programmers don't get much swarf.

In the US we call it CHIPS in Europe they call it a SWARF.

Swarf is an old term that we use in the UK for metal cutting and or chips from all machining operations

Its the stuff you can never get out of your socks . When it comes off hot its attracted to tongues , ears and hair . Swarf from drilling opps can be used for shaving . Apprentices love cleaning the stuff up . It also has the ability to get thru gaps smaller than its self and stuff up micro switchs , coolant pumps ect.
