Anyone have a suggestion for a good vid card to help MC X run smoother. I am going to solicit the boss to put in a request for a better card and wanted everyone's opinion.

nvidia seems to be the card of choice around here, do a search it's be covered a once or twice

We use the Quadro FX 540 128 meg PCI-express(min) or the Quadro FX 1400 128 meg PCI-express(Recommended)When we build systems for MC customers.

Afit,plaese check to see that your computer takes a PCI_Express slot for the video or none of these cards will work.

 

But there are modles from the same companys that will fit an AGP slot.

get the 6800 GT AGP ($200) card. Using a utility called rivatuner you can make this into a Quadro FX4000($1500)

 

you must make sure that it is based on the nVidia NV-40 chip tho...otherwise you wind up with a decent (but not quadro) card.

 

I have done this with great success, using SPECviewperf as my benchmarking tool (an open GL benchmark), improving scores by a factor of 4 or greater

Interesting idea JMC! I might have to see if that utility can do anything for this weak Geforce 4 MX 440 I'm running at the office.

You do have to be careful running the Riva utility it can MOD a card, if it goes bad however it can toast a card as well.

Rivatuner is pretty safe as long as you stay away from the overclocking section.

 

interesting the way it works...both the quadro FX4000 and the 6800 use the NV40 chip...so "unlocking" it is safe. Sometimes it does not work, the extra pipes in the 6800 chip sometimes are broke, but I have never actually read or seen where that is the case.

 

no matter what you can't beat getting a $1500 card for under $200
