I am going to be getting a job, that I need remove a large amount of material. I am wondering what tool paths and tools everyone is using to get the most out of time.

 

The material I need to cut is 6061 so that's nice. However my pocket with be approx. 40"x25"x1.5" deep. I need to have .5" radii in all corners.

 

Would the HSS tool paths with full engagment be my best bet? Or use a face mill for most material removal and go back in the pick corners?

I would use Dynamic mill with a 1" or 3/4 tool. 2 levels 3/4 each. Dynamic mill is in the 2D highspeed toolpaths.

For a pocket that size, I would use a Mitsubishi BAP3500 facemill to hog out all of the stock first, and then finish the rads with a ballnose or a 1" dia insert cutter.

We have a 1.5" BAP 3 flute with aluminum inserts and you can bury it about .300 deep, 7,000 rpms give or take, and feed it around 150-200 IPM.

The pocket will be roughed out in a couple of minutes.

Gotta love aluminum!

I really like the dynamic milling, but seems like its only for pockets, has anyone done a core type with it ? any examples ?

I've done plenty of Core style paths. Just use two chains and turn on the "core" style passes.
