Need advice

My boss knows nothing about machining, design, or NC programming. Somehow he has decided that drawing is indeed the same as NC programming. We import from customers in various formats like autocad, pro-e, solidworks, etc. He believes this is therefore programmed and ready to dump to the machine. All you have to do is run a translater and you have it. He has spent thousands on CAD software and thinks you just take Mastercam to translate it apparently to generate the code. He won't listen to us that drawing is the easy part and then you have to program it to generate the NC.

To make a short story longer...any text specific article you know of to explain the difference to him in layman's terms? Sure need it bad!!

Dave,

Why don't you just show him how the code is generated? That way, he can see for himself.

Just out of curiousity, how did he get the job? Maybe I don't want to know. biggrin.gif

Hang in there, buddy. Welcome to the forum.

Dave Traub,

Welcome to the forum. biggrin.gif BTW, you started this topic in the Instructor forum, which is fine, just thought you'd get quicker responses from the main Mastercam forum. This one is typically reserved for those who teach Mastercam to others. To answer your question, you've got a tough task ahead of you. You will simply have to follow Thad and WTP's advice. Show him all the steps you need to do to generate the code from the CAD source file. By doing so, you will be educating him but you will also be showing him the value of your position within the company. In a way, it's job security.

There is no "magic" code generator out there. Nothing is programmed immediately once it's designed using any CAD. If you really get stuck trying to convince him, print out these replies and show him there are over 80,000 licensed Mastercam users in the world and we all use the software to generate code the same way. The CAD model is only the beginning of a program. If he doesn't understand that after you've shown him how the software works and how the code is generated by posting the operations out, then he never will.

Ask him if he bought a car because it would automatically take him from his home to the office without him having to turn it on and drive it. That's what he's asking of Mastercam. He thinks it's just going to generate code without controlling the output with operation parameters? That's like getting in a car and expecting it to turn itself on and just drive wherever you need to go, without asking you where that would be. HTH cheers.gif

LMAO!

My boss used to think the same way!

Although he does know how to machine and program lathes,be really doesn't know what it takes to set up and program a mill.

It is way way more involved.

As far as the Mastercam part goes,he still doesn't knowthe extent of skill it takes to program a difficult-to-machine part from a drawing.

He gets very impatient and p'd off alot of the times.

Ignorance is bliss I guess.
