Software for backing up data

We use Windows Backup here. We backup to a file, via a VPN, to a terabyte hard drive at my house. We do an incremental backup.

All of this works great except, when we need to retrieve a file it's a PITA since you can't search to find the last backup of that file. I don't like the idea of backing up my data to someone else's server so I am simply looking for better backup software, any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

+1 to Gcode, except I use Carbonite, same thing, same money. Automatic, set and forget it. Like Greg mentioned we copy all the files to a central location for Carbonite to backup, instead of xcopy we use Syncback SE to manage all our file backups. It allows access across the network and will even allow you to remotely backup file from other computers (assuming you have access) and back them up wherever you want, whenever you want. This is nice becuase Carbonite will not back up off external or remote drives so you have to bring everything to the machine that Carbonite is installed on.

I wasn't aware of it, but just checked out Mozy's website.

The latest version not only backs up to the cloud, but can also

be set to back up to an external hard drive.

That gives you the best of both worlds..

Instant access to your backups and protection against

hardware theft or destruction ( fire)

I am not a fan of backing up my data to some other service, probably in India.... Escepcially with Export restrict military and aerospace files. This is why I do it to a harddrive at my house, then I get the offsite protection.

Mozy's servers are in Utah.. and the encryption is military grade..

You can use their default settings or set up your own

Yeah, until the sell to another company in India, or the sister is in India. :p

No thanks, I will keep my data in my possession....just as easy to backup to my own drives... B)

A good friend of mine backed up his stuff 6 ways from Sunday..

It didn't do him a bit of good though.

While he was on vactation, local punks broke into his house and stole

all his computers. He had been backing up to a tape drive and storing the

tapes offsite, but had gotten sloppy about it..

His most recent backup was over a year old.. He makes his living as a

consultant computer ( not CNC) programmer and it really hurt him.

Something like Mozy wouldn't have helped him as he lives in the sticks and

doesn't have broadband.

Now he has a fireproof/waterproof vault built into his basement with a set of backup

servers in it.

In the long run, the data is 1000X more vauleable than the hardware its stored on.

I fully believe in a good backup and redundancy. That's why you need one at work and another offsite - both places will not burn and/or get robbed at the same time.

I just don't believe in my data being in the hands of others, that's just me. And even if you use a service, they could burn too. And if they f up, you are gonna get the standard "cover there xxxx" policy.

you'll proabably be less than happy when SolidWorks moves to the cloud ( 2 or 3 releases down the road from what I'm hearing)

I'm not real happy about that myself

Tom,

If that happens, I will be DONE with SW. I will bring it up on the SW forum when I get a chance. That's total BS. What do you do if your intenet connection goes down?

All this dependancy to the NET is total BS

When using any of the online backup services you need to read the fine print.

Some of them actually claim ownership of the data stored.

Ray Grabowski had a nice article on his blog about this a while back.

I am saving my data on external hard drives and keeping one at home and other at work. Only problem is every time I am copying complete folder and looking for some software which can do incremental backup to avoid duplicacy.Even no need of many options in the software. Please put more informations about this type of situation of saving datas on external hard drives.

Thanks in advance
