I believe MS removed the hack but there are a number of free apps that will allow you to bypass the start screen and boot directly into the desktop, http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ is one.

Do I need Windows 8 Pro to run MasterCAM x6 or can I just use basic Windows 8?

As long as you don't need to connect to a business network, Windows 8 should work for you.

I've been trying to download MasterCAM x6 64 bit on my Windows 8 computer, but it keeps failing, Any advice/help?

"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be updated may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exits on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch." Is the error I keep getting.

Are you trying to install from a "System" disk or a download? You may be missing pre-requisites if using just the download. Just guessing on that.

are you trying to install the X6 MU2 update ?

If so, you must install X6 first, then apply the MU2 update

Thanks for the help! I thought that the MU2 update included x6 since it was so large. I can keep on doing work now!
