20 x D drills

Recommended Posts

I have some holes that are .096 & .157 dia.

Both are tight tolerance (reamer after) true position of .005, I need to get them about 2.0" deep in 17-4 stainless.

Going to get a hold of kennametal for some 20 x D drills, can anyone suggest something they have actually done similar to this that worked? Mitsubishi? Ghuring?

I am mostly concerned with keeping the holes straight.

Thanks.

Thanks everyone,

I just got back from Mikron. Picked up some CRAZY :turned: DRILLS, and the Crazy drill pilot drills to!

Hope to find out weather or not they work soon.

I would have bought Mitsu, but the rep still hasn't called back.

I haven't tried the smaller ones yet, but iv'e been drilling 20x with 1/2'' and 7/16'' Titex drills. We have been most impressed in HRS, and Beryllium.

Going to drill 11'' in P20 this week. I'm not expecting any non pleasant surprises. At 15 inches feed on 1/2'' in HRS we get about 400 holes. Its one thing to see it on Utube, but to stand there and see it for real is a kick. We get a fair deal from our Walter tool Rep.

Old thread...

Good starting choices right there (add sumitomo to the mix and surprisingly iscar works well too, but limited in length). You're not saying which 17-4ph you're cutting. That makes a huge difference! On deep holes in this kind of material, starting straight is paramount. I like what Jeremy suggested.I always used center drill, just a point .010-.020 deep (no spot drill). The same brand short and longer drills. Always used 1000psi coolant thru...You will likely have to chip break, no matter what the salesman tells you ;)

Never heard of those "crazy" drills, another tool in the toolbox :)

Mark, if you ever have an application for them in the future, TRY THEM!

No peck, fantastic surface finish, excellent positioning/straightness. Get the Crazy pilot drills that they reccommend... they also make some for drilling on angled/curved surfaces. They blew my mind...
