Final Machine Water Jet parts

We plan to have some larger parts precut on a water jet and leave about .10 on the surface and finish off on our machining center. Has anyone had problems finish machining parts that have been rough cut by a water jet? Any problems with abrasive being embedded in the material and chewing up cutters? Thanks for any comments!

The only problem we ever have with burnouts, laser cut or water jet is that it's always ordered out of plate that's just barely thick enough. It presents 2 main problems. 1: workholding. Once we went to magnets this problem went away but often times we had to match profiles from both sides. 2: finishing to thickness. Burnouts in particular warp and sometimes they are not thick enough to clean up.

Feed mills will knock the bark off of burnouts very well.

About how much taper or draft for cutting various thickness in 4140 plate. Say .5,1,2,3 inches.

We used to get very thick plates waterjet....

They would be as much as 6" thick and there is considerable taper on a 6" thick cutout...probably 1/16" and it can go both ways of center line depending on cut direction...

And there can be more in the corner when the machine changes direction....it all depends on the accuracy of the waterjet and the person operating it...

We used this process for forging tooling.....I used to design and machine alot of very large crankshaft dies.  for 1500 bucks we could get the waterjet to cut out the part outline and we would use the drop from the center for the punch...
