Center and Edge Finder

I use an indicator and a chair for all of my pickups.

for magnetic steel, i use spi magnetic edge finder. you just put against side and use you indicator to center between two walls, real accurate.

They call it a chair because it looks like one when you flip it over. Shop slang, I guess.

You'd have to hold it in place on your own then. That's when I get out my edgefinder.

That's what I was thinking before scrolled down and looked at the link. I just knew it was going to be a link to a lazyboy or something.

I use a chair or 5 gallon bucket all the time to reach the backside of a tombstone.

 

Thad are those worth the money? Always wanted to try one.

I am not "Thad", but can't imagine not having one...I have the hole-less one, but have to remember to buy one of those with a hole ( a toilet?), don't think they existed when I bought my chair.

+1, even if it is non magnetic, if i can lightly clamp it to the side i will before using a standard spinning edgefinder.

i used to use one but only for a pickup that needed to be super accurate. They work good, just take a little extra time to p/u zero. super accurate though. wouldnt fault someone for using one instead of a normal edge finder.

They're worth every penny. It takes me about 30 seconds to pick up one edge. The second edge is even quicker, now that you have your indicator set to the width of the chair.

 

I don't care for the one with a hole. I like to pick the job up in the middle of the edge. With the hole type, you're stuck picking up right at the corner.

 

A chair also comes in handy if you have a repair job or rework and you have to chart or qualify some existing features. You can put the chair on steps, pocket walls, etc and sweep them; using your machine to inspect the part. I also use it to check big pockets that I'm machining. When they get too big, using Jo-blocks are a pain. I can use the chair to find each wall location.
