BEST FILE CONVERSION FOR MC8?

If you had to ask to a customer for his geometry which would be the type of file requested from best to worst of the following?

 

PARASOLID/IGES/DXF/SAT/UG (Anyone wants to add a type of file?)

Well you go with a STEP file or a parasolid file.

Iges seems still to be the normal.

Parasolid works best for me, I only use IGES when getting a file from PRO-E.

I get most of my files from pro-e or alias and they are all iges. Even when I get files other than those 2, I ask for iges. Seems to work pretty good for me.

There are a number of threads in this Forum which discuss the best format for conversion. Using the most up-to-date software can give you more benefits for file transfers than anything else. Always try to get the cleanest, most informative file format possible.

Of these converters listed, Parasolid is the cleanest form of geometry available to convert into a Mastercam file. The UG files can be exported from UG as Parasolid files. There are STEP, UG and Pro-E direct to Mastercam converters, but they are add-on costs to Mcam. Even without solids licensed in Mcam, the Parasolid file is cleaner than IGES because there will be no gaps between surfaces or overlapping lines and curves. There is typically a lot of "cleaning up" to do to an IGES file, before it can be machined accurately. DXF doesn't support surface data. HTH

If you can get a parasolid it seems to be the cleanest. Step file is next best.

After many years of IGES files from CATIA and UG.

I have recieved 1st SAT file, the most wonderful thing i have seen.

SAT Files work best for us. We get Inventor 4 files converted from the Engineering Dept. and usually have no problems.(Autodesk makes Inventor)

I am really impressed with the .dwg converter for pro-e. But, like said earlier it is an add-on. Rick

 

Anything that starts with Pro-E add a big $$$$$$$ figure!!!

As part of my UG and Mcam classes, I teach file conversions, and give demonstrations of importing Dxf, Iges, and Parasolids into both UG and Mcam. Parasolids come in MUCH cleaner than any of the others.
