I still prefer the contour ramp ol skool thats good to me. I think before X alot of people didnt realize it was there so they gave it a differant name and place. I use contour ramp for any closed chian just about no matter the shape. Constant tool engagement rocks. Just a late .02 thrown in.

I have never used a tool comp.

I went from cutting molds by hand to p.c. cad/cam. (using DNC)

I guess for production parts the wear factor allows the machinist to adjust it at the machine, because it puts the comp in the program.(?)

core pin and inserts pockets are all I do 2-d the rest is surface machining.

thanks for the tips

Rick

Thad, I using contour 2-d. But my molds are a chunk of graphite. It not poco either. its sr-40 at carbone of America and EC-14 at MWI.

(as small as 8"x8"x2" and as big as 40" x 30" x12"

per mold half)

I replace cutters as soon as they look or feel dull.

I offset the pockets .002. i have a custom tool grind shop that makes all my sharp endmills with a +.0000/-.0003 tolerance on the dia.

We ruff the pockets to size with designated bull end mills and finish contour to size with the brand new shape ones. make for a perfect slip fit.
