I just recevied this on my mail that I only use for the forum.

So I know this came from the board.

Come on I hate Spam.

Man, and here I thought I was gonna get the money. Now I find that I have to SHARE...... Sup with that. I got the same message - really off the wall email. Makes me wonder what the real scam is. Maybe if you respond, they hit you up for a "filing" fee.

I have an email address that has never been used - not even for sending mail - that receives spam emails at a rate of roughly 2 a day, which is about 10 less than the rest of my various accounts. I think there's all kinds of ways to create mailing lists for spam. If I use a current DNS (Domain Name Server) table and email to dave@[domain.tld], I'm sure to hit a few billion Daves. You could also use a table of valid user id prefixes and tack on every domain suffix in the book.

What these 'pleas for assistance' with the standard 'multi-million dollar thank you' are really after is: as much personal info as possible AS WELL AS your banking information (account numbers, bank address, etc). With this info, they will of course deposit loads of cash into your account. (RIGHT! LOL)

 

The real intent is probably to use all of this info to create false identities, credit applications, etc...

 

I've received versions that actually ask for this info out-right. The latest ones have become a little more 'personal'. At first, all they want is your phone and fax number. If one sends them the phone/fax info, one will probably get contacted for the remaining info. (Email is iffy, but a phone call or fax from the otherside of the world? Now you can really trust them! )

 

I use to receive faxes like this in the 'before-email' days! They ended up in the same place as now....the trash can!

For everyone using Yahoo and AOL and other free email accounts, you are bound to get unsolicited mail because they are free.

 

With Yahoo for instance, they recently added a "Marketing Preference" option in the mail accounts that allows for additional and all sorts of unsolicited mail to be sent to you without consent. Ofcourse there is a way to turn it off and you have to change your mail settings in order to do so.

You cannot help Spam. But, you can sure find ways to minimize it by watching (1) who you send emails to (try avoiding sending and responding to mass emails) and (2) managing your cookies placed on your system and (3) the type of Web sites you visit. When cookies are placed on your system, they track the websites you visit, gather as much as information as possible, solicit your email in certain cases and then sell that information to others.

 

Software programs such as Adsubtract will help eliminate unwanted advertisements when visiting Web sites and most importantly - allow you to control which cookies are placed on your system.

 

There is really nothing that can be sent from a forum to someone, unless the people running the forum are selling your information, which is not the case here.

Just like Cadcam said, I didnt mean to imply that eMmastercam.com sold my email address, but it was an interesting coincidence that we both got it at the same time. Very few people have my work email address. The only other people that have it are those whom I have emailed (on this forum), mastercam.com, my mastercam reseller and come to think of it a small handfull of clients (oops, I forgot about them). Yes I know SPAM is inevitable, I get so much at home I was hoping to keep it out of my work email account.

hey guys I just posted to just show how much I hate spam and the stupid things they wast are time with.

 

For as many email adresses that I have I really don't get as much spam as I would expect to.
