I am trying to mill a boss to a 4" diameter. I'm using contour with a ramp 1.245 deep. Now the problem is the tool path. It starts off with arcs (I's and J's) to 1.2154 depth then it breaks up the arcs and starts linearizing the helix. I do have that option checked off so I don't get why its doing it. I will post the tool path so you can see what I mean. Any help would be appreciated. Its a 50mm dia High Feed Mill.

The interesting thing here is that it backplots as all arcs, but later posts with a mix of arcs and lines.

 

So my theory is that either the post or post processor is the culprit. Now maybe the post processor is reading something from the machine definition, but the helix settings seem to be ok...

I don't mean to bring you back to this if you've moved on, but I'm still wondering about the stock on the walls. You mentioned that there is .02" in there. Did you try adding a fifth place like .02001? I've had similar symptoms, I think, and it always seems to be rounding problem. I put a fifth decimal place in the operation which takes out the rounding thing and it's a small enough value that it won't show up in the program.

lol, I got it. You ready for this? In the ramp I had to go down to 1.245 and I always select make pass at final depth. However, I find if you don't have a depth that equals the number of depths without a decimal, the cutter does a weird move at the bottom. Example if I have .03 for ramp depth, it takes 41.5 times around to get to depth, thus leaving the cutter on the opposite side it started, which in turn leads to my cutter returning to start point without retracting. Anyway, I usually split the depth to be equal depths and match the final depth, in this case 1.245. I had it at .02964 to equal 1.245 and thus created linear moves at the bottom. I changed the finish depth to 1.247 and put .029 as ramp depth which equals 47 equal cuts. Now it posts arcs all the way. I hope this make sense. lol. Even confusing to me and I wrote it.
