I'm looking into machining some 17-4ph h1150. I'm looking for suggestions on tooling for milling, drilling and reaming. What would be a good tool to face with? What solid carbide end mills should I look at?

really need more info.

2 parts= idiot proof HSS endmill would be fine.

1000 parts= prolly want to look at carbide Varimills and HSM methods

I will be doing 50+ parts

I'm looking for what tools work well in the material not something I will be able to limp through 2 parts with.

run correctly, you could get one Varimill to last for the entire run (depending on volume)

i've seen it on small vise-setup parts 2x3"

 

it was a funny on-going joke with our tool Rep; can we just lease this cutter, and turn it back in when the job is complete?

I have no experience with these endmills, but I've heard good things about them.

However, I use Varimills on mostof my steel and SS cutting with great success.

Highfeed cutters to make pop corn or Varamills to make strings using OPTI-Rough. I have cut at 225-400 SFM with .02 to .06 feed per tooth on Highfeed cutters in 15-5 and like seeing the pop-corn chips beat the paint off the machine.

17-4 ph cuts pretty decent, it's a little gummy though. Any of the variable helix endmills will do well and for the holes it depends on size but for smaller holes a good cobalt drill will do just fine for a short run like that

17-4, 15-5, SS304 are in the same family of material. I use Guhring Varimill 3080 Series and cut at 650 SFM, 5000RPM, 100IPM all day. Use a milling chuck, and some coolant as the material is pretty gummy.

On the complex stuff I'll use Guhring Firex drills as I can justify cost.

For endmills I've found nacro coating works well and for facing we use

Seco tiain coated inserts.

I cut alot of that Matl. and I agree with crazy millmam, we use 3/4 3insert cutter's with through air and 1/2 stepover .4 doc 3500rpm F28.5 all day on 1 set of inserts
