O.K. the union shops thread got me go'in rolleyes.gif

I'ts obvious solid modeling is here to stay and growing every day. right? so my question is when are we (as in us Cad/Cam guys) gonna wake up? we don't grow on trees ya know. I don't claim to be the best there is, but Im not a greenhorn either. My point is someday we gotta stand up for ourselves. I look at it this way, Its gonna cost you this much$ for a program. take it or make it on a bridgeport biggrin.gif I've been on this forum long enough to know I think those of us here are maybe some of the best there is ( THANKS to Mastercam) and all involved. Whats your opinion?? maybe Im all wet

May^Day Stand up for ourselves how. I am here at this job cuase I dont take no sh/t. You mess with my money or my benfits or treat me bad I try to straighten it out if possible if not then I go try ot make it better. This is only one life and got ot be happy in it. I will also add thsi for the solid moodeling I do it all the time and create parts using Mastercam I like it better than others because you dont have to create all of the Relationships when making your models in different files and can combine solids like a feaking dream. I love the solid manger and the ability to name my solid in there.

I think if you give us an example or soemthing to go off of we might get it or I might be just the lost soul on this on. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

I just wish some of the lurkers out there that know their stuff would come in and share instead of holding out. I've taken a look at the member list and there's some bright guys out there. Maybe they are just too greedy.

Preach on Bro'. A warm body to play boss, job stuff out and fire people can be found at any fast food restaruant in town. How many of them can actually make the stuff that we do?

Now you got me going:

My brother-in-law is a mortgage broker. I love the guy. But holy crap, he opens up the laptop, fills out a form that some one else made up, hands off the results to office people that do all the phone calling, gets everything inspected by the office people, and the title people and the closing people, yada, yada...He makes way more than twice the $ I do and never takes a single risk, and never actually produces a thing. mad.gif

Got a cousin-in-law that's a high end hair stylist. Blows me away, earnings wise.

How can someone smart enough to program in 5 axis not be smart enough to make some Duh!?

But it is getting everyone to do it is the hard part.

It already takes me an hour to get to work.. on top of a 12-14 hour day... I'd never see my boy.

I think the reason is security. Contract programmers make alot more than inhouse programmers but ih programmers are guaranteed a check.

One of the best 5ax programmers I have met only makes $17.00 an hour. Why? He will not leave the security of where hes at now.

On the other side, I have met contractors charging $100.00 w/4hr min that I would not let program my vcr.

Just my .02

This when I watch the guy try to low ball me and get another programmer and trash the job..

Then next time I get the job for what I want.

I have done this before.

Ok so lets throw this out there. If you only do one thing and only learn one thing how can you be good at other things. When I was getting my journeyman training which in itself was a joke I was in there with some guys from a company that had never seen a conventional lathe or mill were never going to run a CNC Lathe or Mill but yet after going to the classes were going to be journeyman machinist. I think one guy was a carpenter before going to he class the comapny was asking him to do. It was good to get very basic stuff but I had to correct the Math teachers they hired and show the person they had teaching the blueprint reading class how to read blue prints. It is strange that you dont get the hands on training you use to get in this trade.

I have this idea that I live by. If you dont go and and get what you need and want out of life it will not be given to you. If you are not willing to push and pull to get what you should it will never be given to you by anyone.

I have yet to see a owner go up to an employee in the shops I have worked in and say you have done a great job appericate you going out of your way to help the company staying on your own time and learning things and buying your own tools to do your job working very hard. Here is a good raise to help you and your family. I have been on boths sides of the shoe being that employee and the guy having to run a shop. I hired a guy at one place and was promised he would get a raise after 30 days the owner then changed his mind felt like he couldn't afford to so I out of my pocket gave him his raise till he was hired permanet and given what he was supoose be getting. I know people take advatange of situtions and I know there are people out there that dont give a flying whatever, but there are still people out there and see alot of them on here that got good work ethics, morals, say what they mean, and then do what they say they will.

I guess when you come from a place where noone thinks what you do is good enough you learn how to make it good enough. The doctor has his place and so does the lawyer, but one thing most people dont realzie is without craftsman like ourselves to make the things the world needs the doctors couldn't do the surgey to saves lives and the lawyers would not have what they need to such as the clothes on their back, the car they drive, the building they do work in, and etc.. I am not trying to say we are better than other people by what we do only trying to say worth is worth it is all how you stack it and if you need to find it you find it and you are happy with what you got then noone should say if it wrong or right just the way life is and up to us all to see things not only from our shoes but from others shoes also.

looks like you all feel the same way I do smile.gif

the doctor would not be who he is without people like us. Just a shame we are hidden in the dark room. I tell poeple all the time. almost anything you purchase has had a craftsmans hand in it sometime or another. I no what its like to be in a beat you down shop where your never fast enough. Im done with that! In our area we are far and few. Young kids dont want to get there hands dirty anymore. they want to go right to the computer. NOT gonna happen. My point in all this is I feel we are short changed in the world. our schooling never ends and most of it is on our own time. I can walk out in our shop and run any machine out there. I was trained as a toolmaker for 15 years, but very very few if any can walk in and do what i do.

Just have to vent sometimes

Yeah May^Day I know what you mean helps to vent sometimes. I get that you do what. Do you have to get your hands dirty. Guess what people a little soap and it washes off. I just laugh when people have that type off idea about what we do. I personally spent over $40,000 in tools over the years. I have my own Starrett grade A Surface plate, Height Gauge, Precision Gauge Blocks, Anvil Thread Micrometers to 4 in, and veriners up to 18", Starrett inside and outside Micrometers to 12". You think most people appericate that hell no. My reponse to most people wanting to even touch my tools is only if you want to lose a finger or 2 or 3. If it soemone I trust then if you break it your bought it. Vent on brother vent on. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif
