O/T Thread insert tapping

I need to tap blind holes for thread inserts in 304L stainless. OSG List S108 is a 50 deg spiral fluted cutting tap. Has anyone used them in stainless?

 

My preference would be to form tap. Does anyone know a source for form taps in STI / Helicoil sizes?

Well, this has been sitting here a while. I did some looking and hav'nt found a source Harry. If I come across 1 I'll let ya know

Harry, if you can't find anything if you call Walter Hammond I know they have a source that will grind whatever you want overnight and then drop ship. They are out of illinois, American or United cutting tools, possibly.

Just did a google, the company I was talking about was North American Tool(www.natool.com) they are in South Beloit Illinois, wherever that is.

Check out Emuge and their STI-UN series taps. They have both Inch and Metric sizes. No Druck (Pressure or Forming) taps available but I would rather use one of their cut taps than use any one elses roll form for a screw thread insert anyway - the strength advantage on the threadform would be non value added as the insert would see the service.

+1 on the Emuge taps, they work great on 304 stainless, we use M4 X 0.7 cutting taps and run them about 1500 rpms they last a long time also.

Thanks for the continued interest in this thread. I just got an email from Richard at Morse, no joy there but his reply is praiseworthy for speed and honesty.

 

Just checking further into Balax taps, I'm a huge fan of Balax. Looks like they have the sizes I seek except for 5/16-24. I know without doubt that these will be successful in 304.

 

I'll check Emuge next.

I would look at the HYpro Taps also with a modified bottom can get them in different coating also greta tap.

MSC part # 64182488 --5/16-24 OSG brand. Not the easiest size to find.

 

We use Hypro, OSG, Emuge... They all work great.

I have no experience with 304, but we cut 420 in here and all those brands work good.
