A question on HSK interchangability

We have an Onsrud 5-axis router that uses HSK 63F ER40 toolholders. We often need a longer reach when cutting swarf angles on flat panels, due to the collet holders interference with the panels themselves. Since before I came here, they have used 1/2" diameter collet extensions to achieve the necessary reach.

The trouble with this is that we constantly have terrible chatter problems, due to the poor rigidity & runout of this type of setup.

Iscar has a nice HSK A 63 ER16 toolholder that I think will solve this issue, except that I don't know if the "A" type of toolholder will work in the spindle. Does anyone know if the HSK spindle must be "A" or "F" specific?

We have quite a few HSK-63A spindles over here.  We have bought a few long reach ER16 and ER32 collet chucks from Lyndex Nikken but usually long reach tool holders outside of heat shrink holders are hard to find in HSK. They do make "HSK Adapters" that stack up with your existing tool holder to give you a longer gage length but they will not be much help if you need to get a small holder in a tight place.

The quickest solution is Sandvik Capto

You can buy an HSK-63 adapter the whatever you need to get the reach

It's not cheap, but very versatile and rigid

I 'lub me some Capto. All our machines are equipped with it. Stackable, and quickchangeable. And usual Coromant quality :)
