Mill facing

I am facing a flat on a 4" dia. part and using the facing option. Is there a way for MC not to cut so much air. The last pass is the best and the first is the worst.

Only way I can think of is to create a series of smaller chains and use one chain per face operation at a specific depth.

If you are useing the faceing toolpath, go to cut method and pick dynamic instead of zig zag. This will give you a spiral cut. It is in X3 also on parameters page under cutting method.

Yea I tried it.......looks ugly but doesn't help the situation.....

You want a facing tool path which gets wider as the tool steps down in Z. Is that it?

Here is one way- draw a rectangle the size of the last pass. Mill a pocket zigzag with Tapered walls and save the toolpath as geometry. In the side construction, rotate the toolpath geometry 180 degrees, so the widest part of the tapered path is now at the bottom. Then do a 3d contour with no offset or lead in on that toolpath, starting at the top. Voila

Trim toolpath from side view is a good tool if bring into practice.

Trim toolpath is way to go. it might take couple of tries. you can use mastercam help to guide you

I thought I read somewherein the X4 whats new that dynamic now has a microlift move at the end so it doesnt dwell in the middle of the part, however I couldn't find that option...

microlift is part of the peel mill 2D high speed toolpath.. which is very cool for milling slots in hard metals..

Micro lift is also in the dynamic 2D HST operation as well. Mic6, I think you are looking at dynamic facing, which does not offer micro lifts.

Hmm, I suppose I meant Ramp-out or off in yes Dynamic Facing, but either way, it doesnt do it.

Just to add my .02 Pocket Facing is what I normally use. Like Jay shows above, it works very well and its efficient. No trimming or extra geometry required....
