Turning Tooling Brands

Is there a brand that is better known for turning tooling? Or that has a larger offering than others? We currently use a smattering of tooling brands and it would be good to consolidate if it makes sense.

I think Kennametal offers the most in turning.

Kennametal and Sandvik are my first choice, but Iscar does some good stuff in the grooving and face grooving department

Tungaloy worked great for me and was cost effective against some other brands.

Seco was a good choice and used all metioned above over the years as well.

I've always found Sandvik to be the longest wearing turning inserts that I have used...but pricey. We use mostly iscar here because their sumotec inserts are fairly good, and much more economical than sandvik when you compare machine time / edge to cost.

We run Sandvik primarily for turning, with a smattering of Circle (which sucks, but has legacy here) Kyocera, Iscar, and Tungaloy. Reliability and repeatability is key for us, as "production" turning is our business, and we have centered on Sandvik because they always have in-stock availability and their tools are always the same. This does not, however, come cheap.

Thanks for all of the information. I've heard good things about Sandvik. We don't do a ton of turning, but it would be good to consolidate & simplify our tooling. I'll have to get in contact with a few of the reps and see who's good to work with.

For carbide tooling we use Sandvik and Kennametal. For turning with ceramics we use mostly Greenleaf.

We use Sandvik. Iscar for some minor parting and grooving.

 

But overall, we have found Sandvik Coromant to provide the best value and support. Their training courses alone are well worth it.

We've moved most of our stuff to Sandvik, mostly due to the support we get from our sales rep. I agree the seminars they put on make it worth paying a little more for tooling.

Kyocera ceramics worked well for us when we were turning iron castings all day; running all carbide these days

The lathe guys in our shop prefer SECO Duratomics. We have also used Kennametal and Sandvik. I suppose the old saying, "You get what you pay for" applies to almost any selection. Keep the guys running the parts happy...

Not real sure on carbide, but if you are talking about the holder I like dorian if you got high pressure coolant. they are made very well.
