  1. Ron - we knew what you actually meant, things are a little boring, nothing like a little blasphomy to spice it up a notch.
  2. Additional qualifications - Must have 10 to 12 "assistants" that will be available to document setups performed. Ability to ship things "Yesaterday" and inspire other workers in the plant. Occasionally asked to serve lunch and will be required to turn coolant into water for safe disposal. Attendance is important and we will not tolerate 3 day weekends with the excuse "but I was Dead..." - (I have never had the nerve to try that one myself...) References will be checked.
  3. Code Breaker - Excellent post. My answer to the question is similar - It depends more on the individuals ability to adapt and learn. There are no objective guages that measure common sence or mechanical aptitude - only thru personal interaction can you determine if the person actually "Gets It". Read ChrisM's post and you will see someone that does get it. The guys I work with are off the same mould so really I am fortunate that I don't share in your pain. Make the judgement based on what you think you need.
  4. Boy - I hope some one can help me find a steadyrest for one of these things (It is like getting the Ark from Noah and going to Pepboys and asking for a Rudder! They just don't have 'em anymore.) Seriously, if you know of a surplus one - I am in the market to buy.
  5. Phil - You get the points for reading comprehension. Righty "O" on the undercutting thing. The mori that I programmed used X and C where C was in Cartesion not Angular for Polar Interp. X was doubled (Diamter). My poor memory and it is getting worse.
  6. Call Eliott Applications for some help with this as I think it is a problem with how you are specifying the Polar Interpolation. When I used Polar on a Mori c-ax lathe, I programmed XY and the control did the "Interpolation" to figure out where it had to position itself. Elliott is where you should start.
  7. greif, Send me an email and I will share my market research with you.
  8. Write the order with a Purchase on Proof of Performance clause. If you are not making good parts - then you don't pay the bill. Chances are that the parts you are going to be doing are of a complexity that would be beyond the "Demo Jockey" and this is why he was reluctant to do a part on the fly. Sounds like it is a case of the driver - not the car that has the problem.
  9. Hole size is important. I always use a next nominal larger of on the tap drill chart for stainless - nobody is going to miss that 0.0075" off the crest of the thread that is now radial clearance that I am giving myself (except for those pesky #0-80 holes...)
  10. PS..I'm starting to believe that it is only my shop that is "F'd" up!! Brenden, All shops suffer from some sort of a problem in some areas.
  11. Is'nt any more simple than putting an indicator in the jaws and sweeping the turret. That will tell you if the bar is on centre, what about the rotational orientation of the insert pocket? That is what really matters, the bar could be out .100" and I wouldn't care if and only if the insert was on centre...
  12. Are you sure the tip is on center? Do you know how to check? Peter, What method do you use to check, I have seen the Turning-Tool-Chuck-Jaw-Scribe-Then-Check-The-Boring-Bar trick in the past but I hope that you have something more elegant.
  13. James - I hope that you are in for the standard recruiter cut - 25-40% of the first 6 months wage.
  14. If you are inclined to do things that are a little off - then you could use a drill of the proper length and cantilever (overhang off the back side) the part off on end of the table so that you can get more room infront of the part to use the full stroke of the z axis. I would do this if it were my shop and I was doing it my self - but the operators that I work now would have my head...
  15. Excerpt from the 03-Quote Mastercam Maintenance for SIM# XXXXX, XXXXX, XXXXX(already at v9) - Includes Mastercam X when released for 1 seat of Mill L3, Mill L2, Mill L1, 3 seats of lathe, 2 seats of Solids and Pro-E translator (guaranteed, value of $XXXX) Implied that the term will cover the release of the next version.
  16. Anybody else disappointed with the Maintenance Program? Sept/Oct 03 The sell was "Buy now, get version 10 for free..." Sept 04 The sell now "Buy now, still wait and we might just ship it to you when we are good and ready." From my perspective, I will renew when I get the deliverable from the last version. What are the thoughts of the greater community?
  17. MayDay, Do you have to regen many operations?? From the above psots, looks like a wcs is easier.
  18. After a tool change the tool is normally "Oriented" - M19 and so the servo is holding it tight. By using the technique to start the spindle and then shut it down, you are removing the modal Orient code. If there is a spindle jog or a quick hit of CW then Stop while in manual, this may also get you by the orient. (I use a Spindle Jog on the Integrex to break the orient code)
  19. If the part has a 0.0003 TP Tolerance - Jig Bore it - These machines are made for this type of work. If the customer truly needs that tolerance, they should be willing to pay for it. If you want to be statistically accurate to with the 0.0003 then you would have to have a repeatable result well under the 0.0003 and my stomach would be in knots if I had to run it on some of our machines. Here is the other thing, has the customer demanded an MSA off of the CMM? How do you know the checking device is capable of this type of a measurement?
  20. G28 is the return to home "Thru a Point". If you specify an axis move of G91 Z0. - then an incremental move of "Zero" Inches/MM in the Z Direction will take place before the machine goes to the reference position. You could use G28 in Absolute and specify a height to retract to above the part ie G90 G28 Z10. This would be usefull for a retract move on a horizontal before you swing the pallet and the G29 will bring you back thru an intermediate point as well. Hope this clears up the reason for the Incremental Switch.
  21. Jack, Sorry to hear of your vacation pre-emption,hope all is well. If you are pineing for the flavour of the Haggis, there is usually a Chip Wagon that serves the stuff at the Fergus Highland Games. http://www.fergusscottishfestival.com/ This is coming up in the next week or so and the last time I went, the Gaelic Storm (the band from the Steerage Party in the movie Titanic) played a few sets and they were fantastic. John Allen Cameron is another favorite for the old Lauder songs.
  22. Note to the Product Development Guy: a user-definable 1st X value would be a sweet addition to MC Lathe for facegrooving Chris - This is right on, PDG - From a tooling perspective, the trepanning style of a face groover requires a specific diameter to start at to avoid heeling out on the support for the insert. Check out some tooling catalogues to be your guide when making the enhancement.
  23. James, I would suggest the use of a higher quality drill for your .0003" requirements. PTD has an undercut area on the drill shank where the part numbers are rolled on. Some of the more economical series jobber drills are manufactured off shore and marketed locally at an unbelivable prices but this step is omitted. I like the parabolic flute HSCO drills - Coated ofcoarse, but its your money that I am spending on this application right!
