  1. quote: So the boss asks how can he call the engineer and ask for the missing dimension, when we allready have the part machined ? You have the dimention, right there in the model. Tolerance is all that you don't have, and if the model was done properly you do have the tolerance. You need geometry to program with CAM. If the model is correct, the part is correct. With a good model drawn to nominal you will be good for all but very tight tolerances. Recreating geometry from a drawing is stupid. Import the file and go for it. Machining an engine block on a horizontal is exactly a 3D part. Yes it can be done as a bunch of 2D geometry, but was it designed that way? Use the model and a good post processor and don't look back.
  2. Hi IntegrexMan, Harry(integrex)man here. Got a 300Y and a (still greasy) 300Y III 1500. No sub spindles here. Currently running product on one and making some heat shrink end mill holders on the new one, 1st job on it. How 'bout you?
  3. I like TICN and TIALN cutting 304 over HSS and carbide substrates. In a rigid setup, any of the coatings seem to pay off in 304. I just finished running a 1/4 x .045 bullnose Accupro with TICN that seems bulletproof in 304 and RC52 case hardened steel.
  4. Welcome Bob. Wire? Oh yeah, that's the stuff that's used to hold up mufflers and bras.
  5. Sorry to hear the news guys. We're hopping here. Need three people for integrexing up here on the (temporarily thawed) tundra.
  6. Check out Tigerdirect.com and look at the Athalon / Asus combos.
  7. Make a test cut on a bar chucked short in the three jaw and supported by the tailstock, then move the tailbody with a travel indicator set to show amount of motion. Tapered lathe mandrels are an ancient method for holding a part concentric to an ID.
  8. Victory me. You think a Harley rattles? Pttth If you want rattles check out a 99 Vic. I still like it. And more American than the other American bike. Rattles and all. But no drips.
  9. You can rename 1234.PIZ and it will sail right through. Then rename back to 1234.ZIP on the other end and you're dancin'.
  10. DARN! I thought biking was a sport.
  11. Mazatrol is basically a complex set of macros that are presented to the progammer in a fill in the blank format. You pick your operation then fill in the blanks that appear on the screen. The simpler the work, the more likely your job will be completely covered by the options offered. As jobs become more complex you begin to want to do things that the macros just weren't intended to do. That's when frustration can set in. Like Bretts says, for simple turning it works great. But if you want to angle your roughing toolpaths (funnel rouging I call it), like you can easily do in MC, too bad, so sad, not gonna happen. If you are going to program mills, you'll probably be making a Mastercam sales pitch to the boss real quick. One huge downside to Mazatrol is having to type in all data. Clicking on geometry eliminates the need to have every last detail dimentioned and eliminates typos.
  12. What kind of stuff will you be running? Getting off the Intestress? Happy trails
  13. Gotta Ofna buggy but haven't run it in a while. My sunny boy has a HPI nitro MT that he runs the wheels off, then replaces wheels and repeats Welcome to the MC forum.

  15. Yeah James that place would have driven you nuts too. The day I interviewed, I saw a guy tipping a vise on a CNC, to mill a 45 degree angle on the end of a bar. That's right, he cranked the vise bridgeport style 45 degrees so that the milling moves were straight X or Y. No one in the place could do 45 degree math. Of course he may have been seeking high accuracy he was indicating the vise with a combination square. The boss thought I was wasting time bulding a fixture to machine a casting in one fixture rather than four (they had run that job on a vertical for years and were now running it through four fixtures on a horizontal). I gave them 3 months and split. That company has filed bankruptcy twice in the last 9 years. I don't know the Mori machines. Have a ton of fun.
  16. Who's going to be at the MC booth, and when? I'm not going to mention any names... But I just don't think I can handle stopping in at the booth and seeing a naked guy on a "palletech" hopper talking on the phone and handing out business cards. A Southern Belle on the other hand might be worth the trip.
  17. Only thing sweeter than horizontal is mill/turn Just remember, if it took took six setups to machine that casting on a verticle, it stiil takes six setups to do it on a horizontal, just ask the last morons I worked for... for three months.
  18. Good news about the Mazak fusion is drag'n drop across the LAN.
  19. OK Brendan, you just talked me into going to IMTS just to see the cool stuff. Can I gve you my boss's # to talk him into the idea too?
  20. My $.02, drill and cut tap. Forget laser and ream.
  21. You'll know your addendum is too wide or your teeth are to deep by observing the ages of women that look at you. I cut some bevel spur gears and checked them by making a fixture with axle pins at known positions. It's not the same as measuring, but I know if the gears will work.
  22. Check out Andrew's notes on coolant in previous threads. He's got me convinced to do a better of mixing. I'm right now opening up a Blaser Jetmix unit. Try before buy
  23. Dude! We shoulda had a going away lunch @ Casa Lupita. Enjoy KS.
