create line tangent to two arcs?

Ive been racking my brain here! How do I create a line tangent to two arcs? Not parallel and tangent to an arc, not perpendicular and tangent to an arc, and nor tangent through a point. I simply want to create a line that is tangent to two arcs. I've gone through the help files and have come up with nothing.

Create Line Endpoints

Make sure the Horizontal and Vertical and not selected.

Select the Tangent button on the far right and select your 2 arcs

I always leave my tangent button on, then you don't have to do anything but select the arcs. so the only button i hit is line.

Like specv said, just don't pick the arc near a quadrant or end point

OK, so what am I missing?

 

I created 2 arcs, I go Create line end point if I don't have the tangent button toggled on, the "arc" won't select.

 

So holding down the ALT key I can not select the arc.

but I still had the Tangent button selected on the Lines toolbar.

When I deselected the Tangent button, it wouldn't work.

That's what I see too, so as near as I can tell, the ALT key doesn't do anything. You still need to to toggle the tangent on, I just leave mine selected

i checked and the tangent button was/is always checked. Oh well, I guess I'm not a genius after all

After taking a second look, it appears that my tangent button is always on. I can never get it to snap tangent unless I hold down the 'alt' key though. Maybe it's related to my auto cursor settings?

Yup and I always run with a set of autosnaps that I use all the time. This just means the ALT key does nothing at all.

That's the most reliable way I've found to do it since the initial version of X. :shrug:

 

I just wish there was a way to set a hot-key to turn my preferred auto-cursor snaps back on.
