How Powerful should a PC be to deal with Mastercam easily?

what are you running now?

It's pretty clear you need a bigger machine.

The machine in my siggy was $2K at Dell refurb and can handle 3 or 4 session at a time with no problems

If you're not up for a new machine right now, try upgrading your ram.. the more the better

I think there is a limit with mastercam as to what even a good computer can do, I find once my mastercam file gets over about 150 megs it starts to slow down and become less stable. We have very good computers here but even with X6 supposedly being 64 bit now I find MCX6 still doesn't seem to take full advantage of all of the available hardware.

My 2 cents

Here is the benchmark thread ..

everybody runs the same file.. which is on the ftp ( or in the sample files on your install disc)

If you read through the whole thing you'll be amazed at the improvement

In 2007 a good time was under 10 minutes ... now a good time is under 1 minute

I have an $800 gaiming laptop that runs it in 1:30

This is due to improvements in both hardware and software ...but it lends credence

to my comment on your other thread .... your boss is leaving a ton on money on the

taable running old software/hardware..

Sorry for late reply chaps, left my notes at work on Monday.

I have a Dell T5400

Intel ® Xeon® cpu

E5410 @ 2.33Ghz

3.2 RAM

Nvidia Quadro FX 5800

500Gig Hard drive (but this is empty as everything is setup over a network)

I performed the test provided by Serenity......

The time was 3'02''

Sorry again guys

No reason to be sorry,... the more complex the file are that you're working with the more processor speed & memory you're going to need to handle the information

You can spend money on the front end buying a high-end machine or,....spend money on the back-end dealing with the frustration of slow processing and or files crashing,.....

Thats a great video card but a slow proccessor..

You don't mention your OS but, I'm guessing you're running XP Pro..

you might want to concider upgrading to Win7x64.... then you can upgrade your ram as well ( to 8 or 12 gig)

X4 does not officially support Win7x64, but many people run it with no trouble.

I'm thinking your network must be pretty slow too.

Do you see any improvement if you run off your hard drive instead of the network?

Get the i7 2600k, it will blow away that Xeon.

Unless you're running dual Xeons, the 2600k will beat it.

Might want to get 8GB of RAM, it's so cheap nowadays.

My Dell XPS 8300 I7 3.4 GHZ with a Nvidia Quadro 600 does the benchmark in 43 seconds.

I'm sure the next gen i7's are better, but the 2600 is a good price and it's a beast of a cpu :)

Oh and what James said, get a ssd, those are lightning fast, alot faster than my home RAID0 setup.

Thats the one I have I7-2600 with 8GB Ram and 1T hard drive. It cost me $800 shipped right from Dell on one of those coupon deals :) (Im always looking for a deal) I added a Quadro 600 at $175 and ended up with a great pc for onder $1000
