 You should be safe there. I don't think the holder let go until it hit right around 12,500. That's a 500 RPM safety margin.

How fast do you run your indicator?

Indicators are tricky. In order to spin one correctly you must have a strobe light (a old school florescent light will work when it gets old and starts flickering). Then ramp up the RPM's till the strobe is timed perfect and the needle on the indicator is steady at zero.

Ours never made it to full speed because I hit the E stop right away, so we only lost the stylus. But I was scared that the body was going to come through the door at any second.

All the programs that aren't supposed to have the probe have a IF/Goto statement at the top to change tools . Super paranoid of this.

i think you forgot to put thru spindle coolant on too.  Cools down the stylus tip to achieve maximum accuracy.

You can flag tools as "Prohibit Rotation" on the Makino Pro 5 (310i). I wonder if other controls have the same functionality. Another thing to do is maybe alter the max RPM parameter in the tool change macro if changing to the probe and change back when changing out the probe. Never tried it but wonder if it would work (on Fanuc that is).

closest i've seen is to alias M103 for M3.  Checks the speed and activates M3, turns on coolant.

Then you've got to change 2 parameters. #6073 and #6074 to 3 and 4 respectively IIRC.

FWIW I have modified the toolchange macro's to have an M59 (on a Matsuura, it locks out any spindle motion and orients the spindle) when the probe is called up. For whatever reason the guy decided to change the tool number.....none of these macros can fix that.
