O/T Tap Drill Calculator Freeware

I've recently been running many jobs with xxxx sized threads that are not found on most Tap Drill Charts. As you may know, finding the tap drill size for a #10-64 tap may be a bit of a challenge.

My solution? Create a 'chart independant' application that will calculate the required tap drill size given the tap's major dia, the desired percentage of thread, and the TPI or Pitch of the tap.

It will calculate for Inch Cut and Inch Form, as well as Metric Cut and Metric Form taps.

There are 2 different downloads; The small one is just the executable, for those that already have the VB6 Runtime libraries, and the larger one has an install program. They can be found at cadcam's FTP site under Unspecified Uploads as Tap Drill Calculator.zip and Tap Drill Calc Setup.zip.

Enjoy it and please post a comment if you try it out.

Lathe-Mill,

VB Script is scaled down version of the Visual Basic programming language. It does not create a compiled application, (.exe, or executable). It runs via the Windows Scripting Host, which is free. It has the ability to be used in applications like Word, Autocad and now Mastercam.

The calculator I made is done with Visual Basic, not VBS, so it is an actual application.

You can run scripts by double clicking on the script in Windows Exploder, or by calling it from an application like Mastercam.

HTH

Robk, do you have the VB6 libraries? Or do you need the install program?

Dont the VB6 Runtime libraries come with all Windows OS's after ME?

I made a launcher/stealth copier for a video game publisher for one of their promotional CDs a few years back. I intended to use VB but I soon discovered that the VB6 runtimes are not part of a clean Win95/Win98/WinNT/Win2000 install. I instead created an MFC-based application using Visual C++ because mfc42.dll is part of every Windows install. Lesson learned (and two days wasted trying to test all versions of Windows).

I'm not sure about Windows XP or ME but I would think that they do not on clean installs. Anything that requires the VB6 runtime (recent versions of Office, for example) would probably install it.

Glad you folks like it.

I've got a few ideas on changes I'd like to make. Saving the last mode used, (Inch, MM etc), is first on my list.. wink.gif If you have any other suggestions, let 'em fly!

Rekd,

First of all, let me say that it works great.

Just wondering if it would be too much work to let us write equations in the major tap diameter and calculate them. I am asking because I guess that I am too lazy to get my calculator to calculate before hand.

Just my opinion,

Have a nice day,

What did you use for metric taps? I have always just subtracted the pitch from the diameter to obtain the tap drill size.

Roger,

Most of the sizes I have gotten were from charts, mastercam metric library, and machinery's handbook. For the sizes that weren't available, or the tolerance were different than the 75 % stated in most places, this is the formula I have been using .

Tap Drill dia = Major Dia - (1.08253 * pitch * .75)

I can't remember where I got the formula now, but it works just fine.
