OT - Hourly vs. Salary

With the Labor Day holiday behind us (and the Union topic), I was wondering how many of you Mastercamers are Hourly and how many are Salary. Also for you salaried types, do you get any "comp time" for working past 40 hours? - either by extra time off or some type of monetary compensation.

Me = Salary, no comp time.

Hourly for now but probably not much longer. Have reached the pinacle of the hourly pay scale and have been told the next pay increase will put me into the salaried ranks. Comp time over 40 hours..yes. Salary folks are paid for 47.5 hours per week. Great when it's slow. Not so great when the workload is heavy and 50+ hours are the norm. Comp time makes it more attractive.

Salaried

Straight time for 'authorized' overtime (not a lot of that these days, mostly 1/2 days Saturdays)

Usually put in about an hour M,W,F unpaid time for the goodwill of the boss who lets us skip out here and there when we need it

T and Th I head for the moonlight job at quitting time...

No rest (ever) for the weary...

Been Salary for over 5 years being shop superviors at different places. I like it and i hate it. At time I am making less an hour than the floor sweeper other times I am making what I should. It is all rleative I guess, but didnt work this weekend and took a 3 day weekend the time before that still no where near even but I am getting it there. I cna pay my bills, keep food on the table and a roof over our head as long as i can do that i will deal. We got it alot better than most do so just happy to have a job at this point.

I should add that even though we dont have an official comp time policy, I do get to leave early for a doctors appointment and such with out any problems.

Offically we have a 40 hour work week. But we do work extra hours, and come in on weekends to make sure the machines are running. I've even lugged my PC home. (Rather be at home watching the numbers crunch) One day I'll install MC at home, but I know I'll forget the SIM either at work or home and then have to drive back for it... (I think Cadcam has one that he puts on his keychain.)

The owner says as long as the machines are running you can go home (or take a vacation) rolleyes.gif

For the majority of my career as a model maker (10years) doing prototype work I have been hourly.

Due to long hour's negated by projects involving design, revamping by customers and of course the unseen,it's been favorable to get paid by the hour.

Yet I worked on the other side of the fence (salary) for just over a year.It truly doesnt not add up--in part, due to a joke of a salary I had.

Regardless now back on hourly making more money,

It seems my having to work weekends, (including this past labor day) has become more of the norm.

Infact I was told by managment that "Now that you have gone back to hourly this can be an incentive to work more over time."

I enjoy my job, the industry im in very much. Yet I spend more time at work than at home or with the people I care for.

So as sit im my office programming I wonder at times where are my values?

"An ends to a means or a means to an end?"

-----Steping off the soap box--------

I wish all a good day

Your values are telling you to be where you're being right now, providing food and a warm bed for you and your family.

I worked salary once, and won't do it again unless it comps for the 'extra' days, weekends, holidays etc. etc. etc.

Well I am not your typical Salary person I do what I got to do to get the job done. I am here more than the owners, but not as much as my co-worker. I have old-fashioned values and feel you should get paid for a job well done and I hate people who do take advantage of being on Salary. I only took a Salary postion years ago so I could buy a house the damn bank would not finance me unless I could show steady income even though I had made about the same money for 4 years being hourly. They said well its overtime does not count. I frist got here was working 65-70 hours a week getting paid for 40 on salary so you do the math and tell me the difference an hour verse 40. I wised up and quit working that many hours. I also been relieved of my schuelding responsibiltes and it funny we had over 18 jobs with 450 hours work of a week when I had to do it but now we only get 2 or 3 jobs with 40 to 50 hours a week of work. confused.gifconfused.gif . Kepping waiting for that shoe to drop cuase might have to break old brass eggs out again. Not trying to sound like an a??hole here but compare apples to apples and oragnes to oragnes start trying to do the other and sorry what happens from there and what I say.

My fellow worker (Javi-E)is right on with what he said and he deserves way more credit that he gets and I do everything in my power to make sure what little I can do to help he gets. Hum help get him a raise got more responsiblites taken away from me. rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gifconfused.gifconfused.gif

hourly here to. overtime after 40. we work a 55 hr week. have been on 40 for 3 months now not good for the bank account. but things are picking up. my perks are i can pretty much leave when i want and at this place i could come in in the morning and ask for the rest of the week off if i had to. i guess after 22 years here they learned to trust me. thats what i like about this place. i have turned down better offers for the little perks at this place.

I'm not on hourly or salary. My job ranges from making strategic decisions to scrubbing the toilet.

I almost never get a day off. I've had only long weekend vacations in the last 10 years. I usually work at least 60 hours per week with no overtime.

I have no workers comp or unemployment insurance.

Everyone who walks through the door is my boss.

I'm a business owner.
