Hello !

I want to add some great knowledge ,that a humble donkey grabbed using Mastercam for a significant time .

If you want to draw a circle less then existing radius for 3.1555 do this :

Create /arc/circ.pt+rad/enter letter R click on existing radius ,add -3.1555 and press enter !

Great! Outstanding !

Brains first !

LIDT ,inc. is still alive .

This is an example of milling casting part using remachining as stock recognition .

A model of a casting milled with fake toolpath

,closed this toolpath from posting and used surface-rough-remachining pointing to the first operation .

The second trick is the old school rough -> parallel trimmed to the contour .

This is more dangerous and tricky way .

This is a betta file .

You can grab it here

ftp://mastercam:[email protected]/Ma...remachining.zip

Use at your oun risk .

I am not responsible for your possible crash ,scrapping and so .

I would appreciate any suggestion ,idea ,correction of mistakes or question .

I invite everybode to contribute too .

FYI :

Dear friends !

All the files ,mentioned in this thread are moved to the Iskander Lazytricks folder on Jay`s Ftp .

ftp://mastercam:[email protected]/Ma...nder_Lazytricks

A lot of thanks to the Jay for all .

I have a lot of plans for the future ,I will produce in the near future the definite list of the files with short explanation ,will complete some betta files and produce some more .

I am very busy now ,I started once more to work overtime constantly and have some other things to do too ,so be patient .

Hello,folks !

LIDT is alive !

In celebration of my #2000 post and as a proof that not all my posts are O/T offtopic.gif I want to present my next trick .

You can find it on Jay`s FTP under the folder

Iskander_Lazytricks

LAZYPSEUDOSLOT.ZIP which shows some tricks with slotting using some features and exploits of Mastercam ver9.

Some jobs in ver 8 will lead to part scrapping !!!

Use at your own risk (I use a lot ).

I will add proper explanations later

Hello ,humans !

R U interested to know one more new way to build clean surface negative offset geometry ?

I found it recently and tested .

I can share it , the question is are you working with flat bottom tools with diameter faking making electrodes or uith the real geometry like me ?

If you want to work with the real clean negative ofset geometry I can share my findings .

I would need to test your method and put it through the paces I dont believe in altering the geometry, or in lying about cutter dia. Right now my prefered meth is cutting to neg stock and mixing it up when needed between 2 and 3D cuts.But you know that we've been down that road more than once, but I am willing to give it a try.

Hello ,humans !

I am the third instance of Iskander_teh_Owl ,his successor and continuator

of the thread .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New way to make electrodes geo with negative offset .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Disclaimer .

I take of myself any responcibility for a possible part scrapping .

Use at your own risk

Preface :

Mastercam has limitation :

You can not use with most of 3d toolpathes surface offset negative with

flat end mills or

with offset greater than corner radii .

This drives to one of two ways :

or you fool your program and machine with tool diameter and height offset

,or you saying you have a corner without having it in reality and I call it

"Dirty way " or yopu build real negative offsetted geometry ,that I always

do and I call it : "true way " .

I will speak only about true way and here some of our articles about some of the ways I use : Solid shelling

http://www.emastercam.com/cgi-bin/ultimate...ic;f=1;t=005853

Now ,to the business

A bit of theory .

If you enter the mold with straight electrode movement

wtpeltheory.jpg

Outer corners will add radius to the corners (the value of radii and inner corners radii will be shortened to the spark value !

This drives to some funny conclusion :

you can have electrode inner corners fillets up to the spark radii and still get sharp corners

To be continued ...

All the methods I use have limits :

Solid thickness or shelling has limitations of parasolid kernel ,that makes it not always possible to use and create->surface->offset has this drawback

wtpeltheorybadsurf.bmp

Overlapping and gapping surfaces after this command make it not very easy to use cause you need a lot of cleaning afterwards

Why this happens ?

It looks like Mastercam `s interpretation of surface offset command is not the best possible ,cause it does not take into account neighboring offseting surfaces and will not trim or extend them .

so that`s why you`ll get this frown.gif result

But exists one way to make this command perfect ,if you add fillets before it !!!!!

Have a look on ftp in Iskander_lazytricks folder

the file is

WTPNGATIVEOFSETSURFACE.ZIP

to be continued

Adding fillets to the model is also trimming of surfaces !

If you take your model ,put on all model fillets :

outer fillets radius spark + a very little ammount ,And very little inner fillet :

for metric finish spark 0.07

I use 0.075 and inner fillets 0.005

after surface offset you`ll have outer radii 0.005 and inner radii 0.075

I explained before that inner radii will be less for spark size value so in reality you will have

on outer fillets 0.005 and on inner 0.075 practically the same as on electrode without any fillets ,even better !

I can fastly enough convert any surface model to solid ,buid radii inner and outer ,convert them to surfaces and make surface offset .

There is one even faster way to do it ,you make from solid fillets to the same ammount a bit more than spark size in my case 0.075

Outer fillets of electrode will be ok ,but inner will be bigger to the 0.075 ,which will make on model outer fillet 0.075 .

You can run contour toolpath from original geometry to z-0.07 and offset 0.07 or

delete by hand all electrode surfaces for inner fillets and mill without them .

The first method ideal ,the second much faster and but not 100 perfect ,yet in most cases ok too

this is result of ideal offsetting from example flie level 24

wtpelsurfgood.jpg

That`s what I wrote before :

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A. copy the target layer on the separate layer and make them one color.
B. make new active empty layer for the resulted surfaces with a
different color.
C. Analize->surfaces->set norms to set all the surface normals in one
direction.
D Create ->Surface->offset to offset them .
If the result is not good after undo change the offset value to the
opposite and proceed once more.
You can check a result visually.
Sometimes some entities may be in the opposite direction anyway.
You can correct them making surface offset once more with the double
opposite amount .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In this case better not to delete original surfaces ,but to blank them ,cause some of them are assosiated with offseted ones ,like surfaces for fillets ,deleting original ones you will delete the offseted surfaces too .

So if you are not tired of this B$ and understood something and think this have some sence try to build ideal surface offset negative geometry using fillets and surface-offset command by yourself

grab my file

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

WTPNGATIVEOFSETSURFACE.ZIP

????????????????????

play with it and may be you`ll find some sence and reasons to use this trick or at least to try

it once

Waiting for comments ,reaction and proposals

Ready for discussion of advanced surfacing techniques ,geometry cleaning ,branch avoiding ,

chain repairing and other things to chat about

I am still learning solids. I generally do all of my solids in Pro-e and then send the surfaces into mastercam for machining. I tried the same rational in pro and it appears to be valid. I want to test it on some trods before I pass judgement.

I am currently able to compensate for the radius differences with a 3d orbit in my edm which I have programed to compensate for all of my internal and external corners. This is the only way I found currently which is rock solid. The key to this is you must have a small enough endmill to generate the resultant internal corners from the negative stock offset.

Hevymetl !

If you have a rib say 0.4 mm height 10 mm and taper angle 0.5 degree

and you`ll fool with a tool corner or diameter

The error of fooling will take off all your

rib !

That`s why I prefer not to fool but to go from clean geometry .

If Proe can do the things I described ,that`s even better ,you can get all the model with negative offset and go from it

Regards

The beauty of real geometry that you can use real end mills without corner radius ,IOW flat bottom mills .

If you interested I can show more things like quick toolpathing without bottom inner radiuses and still getting correct toolpathes ,quick surfaces extending using untrim command and other surfasing techniques .

I am ready to show on your typical geometry fast ways of creating negative surface geometry .

Put your geometry on ftp and specify the spark size .

I also ready to discuss ways of geometry cleaning ,recreating ,converting splines to arcs ,chain closing and so on .

Teh opened for future discussion

The same creative approach can be applied to other surfacing commands ,like create ->surface->draft when radius is allowable .

You see 2 sets of draft surfaces :

over rectangle geometry

wtptaperbad.bmp

Bad set

and over rectangle geometry filleted with radius 0.005 mm

wtptapergood.bmp

Good set

Pooh,

I would love to but our system administrator will not allow me access to the FTP site for any reason. I will give him the file and see if he will post it. But I have already been told he will not download from an FTP site he is not comfortable with.

I would like to compare what you are doing with what I currently do. I use the untrim alot to make sure I have perfectly clean edges and to extend check surfaces. My problem is I try and do as little modeling in Mastercam as possible and tool path only. My skills in the modeling enviroment in MC are ok, but my solid skills are non existent.

Thank you for the time you spend helping and teaching. cheers.gif
