machining a chain

The other day I was watching a re-run of the rifleman, and this dufus kid was whittling a chain from a solid piece of wood.

 

I got to thinking, how would you go about machining a chain from a solid piece of steel?

Metal centering would be my thought these days of technology.

i would think the 2 hard parts would be supporting the links for the final cut-off and finding some sucker to let you use their 5axis for a week of trials.

 

can't help with the latter, but would bismuth or plaster for the former.

It makes me laugh all the suits with the hard hats. Afterall, a bit of orange plastic will help no-end if one of those 12" links twats you in the head

You could always use the machine as a boat anchor

now that i think of it a friend did one on a three axis years ago. there were a couple of helpful factors:

the space between links was relativity large for cutter clearance plus the link cross section AND link shape was square. This way you can hold in vise, rotating 180 then 90.

ok obvious answer .. go into Mastercam .. chain a selection .. post program.. send to machine.. machine chain.. done lol
