  1. That's great Bill, thank you for sharing that! Where are you based? Sandvik has done some presentations at our college, recently the hole-making one. They provide a lot of nice test tooling for us too. p.s. I like your computer specs, but I have ya beat with 100x less ram (no mastercam however, just hand written games)

Here's the scoop on importing history: The function in solidworks (eg, extrude, sweep, fillet) has to be matched to the same function in Mastercam...so if you have a rib, scale, intent, deform, join, combine, cavity, etc etc etc etc in solidworks, mastercam obviously doesn't have those functions therefore it can't "create" them in a history tree. We're lucky that hole wizard features come in (however the head clearance field is NOT recognized and added in the import!). Importing with history is sketchy. Your best bet is to import with features, then do a file > change recognition and import as a brick (no history) and see if it matches. Works very well to validate your history model which can so easily be wrong... hth

  5. Hmmmm, What kind of work, and what do you consider laggy? You may not be as laggy as you think if you do mold work.... It's all relative. When I had 4gb of ram in my new(2yrs ago) i7 system, I have a great benchmark still to this day. Running 16gb now, but ironcially benchmark improved modestly. Your rig is within the modern ball park, (UNLESS you've got big files, 5x) ...I'd venture you have something else software wise wrong with your system. Open task manager and see what's running. I've seen HP and Dell oem builds with 90+ process running! About 20 of which are junk! That stuff will kill ya. If it's set up right, a well tuned modest machine could out perform a high dollar out-of-the-box OEM machine . Oh, are you working from a network or external drives? Read/writes over ethernet, usb, etc are horrific.
  6. I almost did that, and my thumb. Just to see it all, I ran all the way through the program in single block....Chamfering a 20 tooth gear, each tooth about 15 lines of code. Here is a link to the machine. A Taiwanese built with all Okuma electronics and drives....and the American name of Bridgeport/Hardinge. Can't imagine how the hell that all came about, but pretty interesting combination of nationalities.. They wanted to compete with Haas/commodity machines I believe. Well put together for an $85k-ish machine. Good sheet metal and design, way better spindle, Okuma control, etc. etc. I like the thing, but the ballscrews are pretty small. It's pretty fast and reasonably accurate. AND a few weird issues with the control. THIS being the latest! Here at the community college I teach at, we have a nice program going with the the Okuma dealer (Gosiger). They needed a presence in Oregon, we needed technology...,.so we started a partnership. We dedicated a nice showroom/shop, and they brought in several machines. Sandvik also stepped up big time and contributed at least $40k of tooling. They bring customers in, we (advanced students and instructors) get to run them, learn and play. . Pretty darn cool. Great relationship. Gosiger get's to demo and sell machines, we provide the trained operator and a student gets a job..... and manufacturing grows back in America (and folks get to see Sandvik tools run at some ludicrous rates....1/8 drill at 85ipm 1" deep x 50 holes) My usual AE is out of town, so I'm fumbling through this on my own with you guys. Thanks again. Hell, if I have a problem with my garage door opener, I can usually get a faster (and better) answer here at the mastercam forum that at a garage door forum!
  7. Thanks Greg, Hmmm our program select window looks different, and I don't recall seeing that choice of program size. It's a 200M on a new Bridgeport/Okuma machine. I'm away from the machine till tomorrow afternoon, but can't wait to get back at it and check. How do you take the screen shots of the control window? Can I plug a keyboard in and hit prnt screen? I turned on the filter in the toolpath, reposted, and it will run fine then. Leads me back to something with the actual code it doesn't like. But you'd think it wouldn't run at all if that was the case....but it WILL one line at a time. The geometry is a gear profile that is arcs and lines. The code you see up there is unfiltered, and still has nice arcs and not point to point. Between this, jamming up the tool changer, and hooking it up to our deep college network I'm learning this machine pretty quickly!

  9. Program (mill) runs all sorts of dynamic toolpaths no prob, then gets to a simple 2d chamfer and just freezes. What's weird is turn on single block and you can step through the program just fine. Checked all active g & m and nothing is different from a good running program. All moves basic G3's with I J K's. Ideas Okuma guys?
  10. I'd have to agree on the +/-.002...Nice and simple unit though. Sounds good for your application and price point. Make sure the cabling is good and well routed, I've found weird tension to affect accuracy (it was actually flexing the unit).
  11. Here at the college we just got in a P300 simulator (control box) for a Multus. The AE was running through it a bit and it is very, very powerful. Unfortunately I probably won't have time to learn it.

  13. ok let's cut to the chase: To take someone who has no experience with cad/cam software from .iges to some sort of runable g-code is about a 2 month learning curve. That's approx 10hrs class time and studying per week, and that's with very rudimentary skills at best. If things get complicated, which they do fast, expect a 4-6 month learning curve and a whole pile of scrap parts in the process. no offense, but that's what's required to generate g-code from an internet downloaded iges. And that's why competent programmers start at 20$ hr. Private contractors, 60-120$
  14. I tell people if they do have to move a customer file, always move a copy. For that reason, then you can do a file > change recognition no problem. The imported rev will line up with original. Then if the part had to be re-moved, with xform > dynamic it's usually a breeze. (and verisurf hole axis). But if your wcs 5 axis works, your lucky and I guess it doesn't matter. But for everyone else, there's my two cents worth of tips.
  15. It'll work with wcs if your just using toolplane positioning. If you're full 5 axis paths, move part to top/top/top.
  16. Sorry late to the game here. Sandvik Do you have thru-tool coolant? What's the material? We were recently drilling .125 holes 1" deep at 70ipm. . Let me know and I'll get you the part numbers of the product family.
  17. Late to the game here, but: Check your surface normal. Edit > Set Normal. Surface finish contour (or rough, they are the same) and flowline are the only toolpaths to support undercuts. Contour has fantastic control for extending the toolpath and lead-in's and outs. Also if needed, use the advanced settings button and select roll tool "only between surface edges". hth
  18. Hey Chris, in the print of your thread mill the radius adds up to .500 (1" dia). In your thread mill custom tool you enter the dia as .750. ?
  19. Removable with what? Fingers, hammer, arbor press, hydraulic? It is getting annodized? That will change your ball game a bit... If not .7505 will be pretty darn snug. .0005 will give you finger-fit. .0015+ heat & arbor press at that 3/4" size.

  21. Go right ahead. You've really got ALOT of functionality into your site there. Nice. Yes the headroom on those toolpaths seem near limitless at times. Frequently dictated by machine's dynamics and capability alone..
  22. Don't forget regular chip thickness calculators are no good, because of radial chip thinning with the reduced stepovers. Also, if you don't mind, when you find some good results, enter them in the dyanamic milling database (in my sig below).
