The level Manager is making me woosey!

Recommended Posts

jeeze gcode how old are you?

my first system came with a monochrome monitor, 256k ram, and 1 5.25 floppy. I think it was and intel 8088. The first upgrade I made was 640k ram and a NEC V20 CPU.

Remember "insert disk B"

2 billion levels? Anyone remember these too???

No-one will ever use 128meg RAM!!

How on earth am I going to fill a 40MEG HDD???

WOW!! a full MEG on a floppy?!? What will they think of next?!?!?

Nothing against ya Bruce but to use 2 billion

levels just spending 1 second per level never going to the same level twice would take 63.4 years.

I don't plan on spending that much time on one file.

After opening X go to the level manager, right click in the levels area, pick get named levels, and select blank levels.csv. It will load the first 2000 levels into you level manager.

Mark,

I loaded this file and it works as adverstised.

However, it does cause a significant performance hit.

I was using it in a file containing solid models of (2) 8in vices and a simple part

23.5 by 2 x 4.5.

When I hit "ATL Z" to bring up the Level Manager

it was taking 3-5 seconds to pop up. I open the Level Manger hundreds (thousands???) of times a day. 3-5 seconds is significant.

I chopped your file down to 200 levels and made a new file with the same solids. The Level Manager

pops up instantly.

I'm running a

P3.2 with a 2 meg L3 cache

2 gig of ram

Quadro FX-3000 AGP video card

XP Pro SP2

Its not a powerhouse, but its not slow either.

If I'm seeing a 3-5 second delay with 2000 empty

layers, what kind of performace would I see

if all 2000 layers had entities on them ?

How long would it take to open a Level Manager

with 2 billion empty levels or 2 billion levels

with entities ???

Could a modern computer even open a file with 2 billion levels??

My point is this..

We have lost the function "Open All Levels"

because opening 2 billion levels is not pratical.

My experiment with 2000 levels leads me to believe

that 2 billion may not even be feasible.

If that's the case, can we please have

"Open All Levels" back???? smile.gifsmile.gif

try this and tell me what happens. Alt+z then under the list levels select box, choose one your not using, named for instance. tell me what happens to the numbers. On my box they go competely out of order..what's up with that. Now try this. cut and paste a name via the ctrl+c, ctrl+v method.

500 levels is probably enough for anyone -

BUT

Can we do away with the dedicated forced level number and just add each new level by alpha – numeric???

the merging in of multiple file data sets and having to presort the level names to unused numbers is killing me.

Oh - and it would be nice if the column width stayed consistent when opening up new files both in X and V9
