Engraving tool recommendations

I have a new project which requires engraving text .005-.010 deep into 6061-T6. I have just used a #0 centerdrill in the past and it did the job good enough. I need this engraving to look better and am looking for recommendations for a nice cutter. The sample part I received looks like it was createdwith a .012" dia tip engraving tool.

I always use ball endmills. For 1/8" tall characters I use 3/64", for smaller I use 1/32".

Harvey Tool makes a nice selection of engraving cutters. The come with 30 40 60 and 90 degree included angles and .005 .010 .020 .030 flats. They also have them with no flats or radius tips. I haven't tried them but most tools from Harvey are pretty good.

.010" Deep 6000 rpm 100ipm. Works good.

Saves a couple tool changes, using it for chamfering, spotting, and engraving.

We use both ball endmills and the Harvey tool cutters. I personally prefer the ball endmills, but others in the shop sing the Harvey cutter's praises.

single flute carbide 1/8" 82 or 90 deg. countersinks work fine but have no flats on them

#1 or #2 carbide centerdrill works awesome in hard metal or alum. Sharper and easier to read then using ball, and wont chip like many engraving tools will.

I have the Harvey book open and have left a voice mail with Harvey looking for help. They have 2 flute cutters and pointed cutters. It looks to me like the 1/8" 2 flute 90° included .010 web thickness cutter #50408 will do the trick. Anyone have experience with the 2 flt compared to the tipped off half round cutters?

depending on what year catalogue MSC pgs 194-200 or so has good selection of single and multiple flute countersinks

We have used harvey 30030 for aluminum and 23608-C3 for steel, both have worked very well, not burr free though. We use a stone after to remove the burr.

1/16" carbide ballnose is what I use.

Micro 100 .250 60deg engraving tool with a .003 flat. Lettering is crisp and burr free.

the tough tip engraving tool looks like it could be an answere to a problem we currently have. engraving parts aprox. rockwell 45 and have to take depth cuts to achieve .006 depth or tip breaks.

could any one confirm if we went with the tough tip are you taking it all in one depth. we only have 7500 spindle.

with the ingersoll tool i can engrave inconel 625 .005 deep , 6000rpm 15ipm without any chatter, burr or tip breakage, i simply never rotate the insert

Anyone have pics of engraving with the Ingersoll tool? Sounds like one worth looking into. If it can really do 1/8" tall characters I am sold.
