How much time to program this part?

Just curious how long you guys would estimate to do this part. Not looking for any record setters, just normal programming pace (and the usual interuptions)

Ready, GO! biggrin.gif

Mat'l is 4340M. Rough prior to heat treat then finish. Bearing bores are +/-.0005 dia and location is tight! Consider the rest of the part +/- .007". There are two angled holes for grease fittings 2pl at the yoke side (thru one side). Programmer designs tooling and dreams up machining strategy, orders cutters and models the part from print views drawn in 1972 (nice huh?).

Now the machine is a newer Fadal. Not exactly a steel machine but does ok. Max cutter dia for roughing is .75dia. You can use insertables but probably won't go biggger than 1.5dia" and .2"axial cut.

A 4axis vertical is used to finish the bores and grease fitting holes.

Yeah, I was asking how long to program.

I'm looking at 1)dovetail 2)rough top 3)rough bottom. 4)4ax rough bores 5)finish top and profile. 6)finish bottom 7)4ax finish bores 8)4ax finish grease ftg hole 1 9)4ax finish grease ftg hole 2.

2 programs for tooling.

I'm guessing about 60 hrs. total my time.

I do not see 1 1/2 weeks work in that part.

It depends on the machinery available.

A part like that requires more fixturing if you

are restricted to a light weight VTL with a 4th

axis rotatary table.

You have a lot more options with a 50 taper horizontal or a 5 axis table/table setup.

It also depends on whether you're building

2 parts or 200

and

will you have skilled machinist or button pushers?

A skilled machinist/programmer in a well tooled

prototype shop could easily knock

a couple of these out in a week and a half.

Designing and programming a manufacturing proccess with

all the required part and fixture NC files, in- proccess part and fixture sketches

etc etc etc.. is a whole lot of work

THIS is the part most customers/engineers/clients seem to forget when they shriek in horror at a time estimate.

If prints are legible and no missing information my quote would be:

6hrs to Model

10hrs fixture design and program

15 hrs of programming.

The rest shop owner could handle.

Nice part !

I think also about 40hours to program.

Can you share and upload the part ?

It's very interesting how long it really takes time to program.

What about everyone how want, can program it and show the results here ?

It will be also interest what strategy is used.

  • 2 weeks later...

Yeah. Someone might use it for a boat anchor or something.

I guess I won't freak anyone out and say that its an aerospace part. Oh, wait...

Hey you make it and use it for whatever you want.

Next images I show will be SI girls. You appreciate that right?

Starting this thread was a mistake. Won't happen again. Have a happy non-paraniod week.
