Are the Graphics Gonna be improved in X5?

I don't even bother with verify If it don't look right in backplot 1st.

Dave, use two monitors for one week and you'll have no desire to use 1. Seriously, opening other apps or windows on a separate monitor while keeping MC open really does improve your work flow. Your favorite nc editor, op manager and level manager or SW on a second monitor really is nice. Even if you have to use two different monitors (YUK) just to try it out, you should still get a feel for it's advantages.

Thad, Solidworks can look Tellytubby-ish, Monster Garage-ish, Martha Stewart kitchen-ish, and so on. Hues, lighting, reflections, sheen, and backgrounds to name a few options, are totally customizable. It's surface/edge selection is far superior as well.

I have 1 set of eyes so I look at one thing at a time. Minamize / maxamize works wonders. Now I can appreciate different the spirit of 2 screens but I would prefer one screen split. I like my screen dead center and I don't like the idea of looking thru the frames of each monitor touching.

Again, it is just my preferance and I know many people like 2 monitors

Rob,

Yea, the setup looks cool but like I said I would just like it all on one monitor. Mold the two as one and it's really the same. I see you have 2 22". I have one 24" now but would prefer one 30".

I get my space pilot on Thursday and I can't wait for that. Especially for SW I am really looking forward to it.

BTW, based on your setup, what is Tom talking about headscratch.gif I see you have your ops' manager on the left monitor. From his post, I got the impression MC could not do that headscratch.gif

I am sure I must have mis understood him.

Dave,

If you double click the title bar on the Ops Mgr it will un-dock. Then you can move it to the other monitor. Double click again and it re-docks.

I guess I just like the added width of dual monitors. It frees up more space for the Mc graphics area.

BTW - You're gonna love the SpacePilot. smile.gif

Best money I've ever spent.

you did.. You can move your ops manager to a second screen in Matercam.. leaving one screen

for nothing but graphics. One you get used to all that real estate you'll never go back.

You can't do that in Solidworks or any other

Cad/Cam package I'm aware of.

Solidworks has a dual screen setup, but its very lame.

Personaly, I think Space Pilots work better in Mastercam than they do Solidworks.

Be sure to set the select Center rotation point command to your right mouse button.

When I do large molds with high quality finishes I can't get verify to work without crashing if the stl and tool tolerances are lower than .004. For me, the verify issues and run time is one of the biggest time wasters because I will run verify and use the resulting stl for rest roughing. If it crashes in the middle of verify I can't really proceed...

Compared to current CAD software many aspects of Mastercam remind me of the infrastructure of a third world country. It is just sub-par. I am constantly getting these nagging issues and I feel like I am running a beta version or something. I couldn't imagine being an actual beta tester :-)

how does NX compare in price to MC?

I really don't know Dave. Maybe somebody else could let you know the ballpark figures...

UG has made major adjustments to its price and

maintenance cost recently.

Both purchase price and maintenace costs are

down substantialy since Siemmens bought UG.

It still cost more than Mastercam, but its more like 15/20% more instead of 50/60% like it used to be.

It's hard not to look at it for those numbers.

Don't get me wrong, MC does a fine job for our needs but I am just concerned about the old-school architecture based on some of the newer software packages and how things are handled.
