no projections found

Are they ever going to fix this problem. It's been happening for YEARS. I'm sick of having to shut down mastercam about 10 times a day just to be able to project an entity onto a surface. I've tried everything I could find on the forum and nothing helps except for shutting down mastercam. I think if they could've fixed the problem they would've by now.

Hi Tim,

Are you running the RAM Saver utility? This handy function rebuilds the Mastercam Database, and rebuilds the Display List. Try running that instead of shutting down Mastercam. It might not help, but I've found it to work really well at cleaning up any performance issues. I will run this utility after moving/copying operations, or making a bunch of parameter changes in the toolpaths.

I sure hope so.  I was kinda hoping someone knew something I didn't at this point. Thanks for the response.

restarting fixes half of the thought to be bugs.

...' when you have MC open too long, things stop working'.....

just restarted because wcs and views stopped updating.

Honestly Tim, I have my phone set to a one hour timer all day everyday to restart MC.

It really helps for the random lock ups too.

Collin, that does not help.

So how long do you have mastercam running before it will not project for you?

Jay, all restart fix issues, usually randomly start occurring in the 45 minute  to 1 hr range, all the way back to X2.

The project, wcs/views, some transform things, chain selection window disappearing....etc.(many more)

all star occurring, once the any one of them stops working.

I will try doing some these thoughts and look for these issues. I use mastercam daily for hours and do not find myself shutting down MC. I am lucky if I get one to two crash's a week. I must say that I find X8 to be really stable for me.X9 is now feeling the same.

I did find and still due at time in X7 to have more issues for sure.

Collin,

I've tried running ram saver and regenerate display list several times in the last several years. The only thing that fixes the problem is shutting down and restarting. I would say I average about 8 restarts a day so probably about once an hour. It's just really really frustrating that they won't fix this issue even though it's been a problem for literally years. It's just ridiculous. Sorry, about the rant but it really gets old having to shut down and restart all of the time. I mean mastercam is "suppose" to be the best cam package out there, right? I shouldn't be having these kinds of issues. I also have to restart because my curser starts sticking on the pan icon. Oh well, maybe X9 will be better. Thanks for all the responses

Mike, I don't think I could talk them into investing in an ssd. I might research that a little more later. Thanks for the response though.

The Bear, I always work off my C drive. I'm not sure where my temporal files are placed, can you explain? I just recently added 4 more gig of ram, not really sure if it will help.

Thanks, Tim

This is still an issue, for me at least.  EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to project a curve onto a surface I get the "No projections found" error.  This is dead simple stuff but it doesn't work.  I know if is just utility and it isn't a sexy project for the programmers at CNC to work on but it needs attention and it will make my job easier and faster, which is why I pay maintenance.  This is REALLY low hanging fruit SO PLEASE FIX IT SO IT WILL WORK RIGHT!

I get SOOO pi$$ed off when a no brainer that should take one minute ends up taking 30 minutes, creates a crapload of frustration and culimates with a rant on the forum.  This has been going on for years.

It's kind of hit or miss for me anymore. Sometimes it will project other times is requires a restart.

Sadly, you may just have to incorporate this into your processes. When you need to project, save the file, close MC, open MC, open your file, project...every time, as though it's just "how you do it." :ouch:

I guess it depends on the kind of work you're doing

One series of parts I do requires projecting curves and lines to a surface, hundreds of times a day and this never happens to me.

Maybe because the surface is very simple  ??? ( a large shallow cone)

The only time I get the "no projection found" error is if I'm in the wrong construction plane and there really is no projection.

One thing I have found is the status bar will say I'm in Top ( or whatever plane is required) , but I'm not really in Top

Then I switch to Front then back to Top and the projection works

I use this quite often myself. I find I have better luck when only the entities to be projected and the surface are on the screen. In fact, I have a button on my mouse set to (i think, can't remember always use mouse) alt+E. I don't recall having to restart to get projections to work when I hide everything else. A guy at a competing company dropped that trick on me.

I am projecting a number (Create/ letters... in Mastercam) onto a mold surface for labeling via a 3D contour.  In one instance I recreated the surface in Mastercam as well.  I tried projecting relative to view, to plane, etc...  I transformed the curve to within .2" of the surface, nothing.  This has worked in the past but with no reliability, I just felt really lucky...  It sounds like people have found tricks to make this work reliably and that is my point.  It should just work with no hocus pocus because it is a really basic feature.  I can design complex assemblies in CAD, program 5-axis, create some pretty complex surfaces in Mastercam but I can't project a label onto a mold surface so I can cut it with a 3D curve...  UGH!  I ended up chaining the label in 2D, cutting with a 2D contour and projecting the toolpath onto the surface to get it to work.  I can do all that but I can't project a simple curve.

It'll cut a few steps out.

That is what Bob is doing to achieve it (unless I read his post wrong) :)

I've encountered this issue sporadically, and the only fix I've found is exiting, and restarting MC. I agree with Bob, it is a very basic function that should have been fixed.

Toolpath Projection = Surface -> Finish -> Project

Used to be (in the old days) Toolpath -> Project.

But, yeah, still more work than it should be :)
