Contract job shop (mostly defense work)

70% 4 and 5X milling

20% Mill/turn center

10% 2D lathe and mill

I don't run machines anymore.

Most of my projects take 2 to 4 months to complete

There are 2 or 3 projects going at once

and there are always emergency jobs that show up at the worst possible moment.

we do mostly aero space - since aircraft industry has been suckn though we have got into - oil field, and more government work.

______________________________________________

I do 3,4, and 5 axis programming - mostly 4 axis, but most of my cornet work is 5 axis.

_________________________________________________

I run the machines sometimes here, but they prefer programmers to stay up stairs. Before I worked here though I setup and ran machines + programming. My first to shops I worked at I did more conventional work more than anything. Last 6 yrs though has been CNC machines and programming.

_______________________

We have over 28 CNC machines + one laser and waterjet machine. Now there is only

4 of us laying down code. All of us can program for any machine here 3,4,5 axis. biggrin.gif

It was 6 eek.gif ... In process of training 4 of the operators to use the other seats of Mastercam. They're doing great, which leaves me more time for design work, quoting, etc...

We....errr I, do 100% 3-d surface machining programming. Use 3-axis CNC mills.

I do it all...gramming, machining, engineering, polishing, even sweeping the floor after the chips get so high I can't walk out the door..... smile.gif

Make forging dies.

Oh ya, only keep 2 CNC mills going...sometimes a manual also.

What type of work do you do?

We produce power transmission components [gear sets, gear heads, actuators] for industrial machinery, semiconductor manf equipment, aerospace applications, and [recently] robotics; just shipped our first order to be delivered to Fanuc for use in the LR Mate robots.

quote:

What type of programming do you do?

Mostly lathe, probably about 15% 3ax milling. I try to hog the milling work when we get it.

quote:

Do you run the machines also?

As a rule, no, but I am pressed into service on occasion. We worked about 20 consecutive days toward the end of last month to hurdle some outside-vendor setbacks [oops, just trashed all of the parts you sent me; sorry] and the only guy that I have trained to run my twin-twin Okuma was out with surgery so I was LT boy for a few days and then pitched in on the lathes for about a week. I work 2 nights a week for my buddy so I setup and run his Haas machines [sL-20, VF2-SS, VF3] sometimes.

We currently have 22 CNC machines with 3 programmers / manufacturing engineers / machine repairmen / troubleshooters / do-what-needs-to-be-done-guys

i support MAstercam. i train and do tech support and write post processors. i have a DaVinci router that i program for class. we also have a 3D printer for rapid prototypes. what i don't have is deadlines and unruly engineers that want their parts yesterday. i don't have a tool crib that always seems to be out of the tool i want. i don't have aromatic coolant, hot chips flying at me or two sets of clothes, one for work and one for play. and you know what, i miss it!!!

be careful what you pray for , you may get it. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Mill 2d mostly.

Lathe

Wire mostly 4-axis cutting carbide with 0.004" and 0.006" wire

I can run them when I have to. I use to run the Wire EDM all the time until I trained soneone else.

At once? As far as how many machines run on the floor. About 300 to 400 machines biggrin.gif

Not really anymore (thank god)

If I want to make a few more $$ on the weekends,I will come in and bail the slackers out! biggrin.gif

The only other times,is when they need the parts done "right"! eek.gif

We have approx. 35 cnc's (lathes/mills/edm's)

I am looking to get some more training so I can learn more about surfacing/solids/3D programming, although we really do not have much use for it.

Whatever there is to do.

We have 17 VMC's and 7 Horizontals but there are 6 programmers.

The reason we were not hit too hard for too long after 9-11 was because companies were mothballing their larger aircraft they were purchasing aircraft in the 70-130 seat range. So, we were growing our competition was shrinking, we went out on a limb and developed new business and now we're in great shape to ride a boom.

I'll bring up the rear being a programmer for an Extrusion die shop.

Use V9.1sp2 level 3.

I do hollow dies for extruding tubes and housings of several types using 3D surfaces. I build hollows from lathe to finished stack on CNC mills. I program 3D contours for shapes on flat dies and drop bearings on CNC. Most dies go from lathe to CNC mill to run complete. Heat treat dies and wire cut the shapes, polish and ship.

We have 4 VMC's, 2 Bridgeports, 2 Mazaks (soon 3 Mazaks for a total of 5).

My day shift guy has been off lately, and when he is off I program for 3 shifts and run mills all day too. Normally I program all day. One day guy, one night guy, and one weekend guy for operators.

Most of my work is quick (2-4 hours on the mill) so I set-up around 20 times a day. Makes for a hectic day.
